WORKPLACE ROAD SAFETY IS AN ISSUE – the Human Impact • In Australia, road crashes are the most common cause of work-related fatalities, injuries and absence from work • In WA,14 traumatic work-related vehicle fatalities have been notified to Worksafe between 2000-01 and 2010-11 • During 2011-12 in WA, preliminary data shows 430 incidence claims involved ‘road transport’ and ‘vehicle accident’ injuries, a 24% rise compared to 2009-10

WORKPLACE ROAD SAFETY IS AN ISSUE – the Business Impact • During 2010-11 in WA, an average of 111 days were lost time injury and disease (LTI/Ds) as a result of ‘road transport’ and ‘vehicle incident’ injuries equating to an average estimated $50,508 in workers’ compensation costs per claim (WorkSafe 2013) • Costs not usually identified include: • personal injury, medical/hospital costs, absence from work, workers compensation, downtown/productivity loss, administration, potential loss of customers, loss of assets, retraining and insurance premiums

  4. WHY TALK ABOUT ROAD SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE? BUSINESS TRAVEL • 59 per cent of distance travelled in Australia is for business purposes or for travel to and from work. • Road crashes are the most common cause of work-related fatalities, injuries and absence from work.

A Workplace is considered to be any place where people work or are likely to be in the course of their work Safe Plant and Systems – Employers must take measures that are reasonable and practicable on all matters within their control Employers are responsible by law to provide employees with a safe workplace –and that includes Vehicles Employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own safety and health at work. DEVELOPING A CULTURE OF ROAD SAFETY AWARENESS • Safety and health planning should address any risks to employees when using vehicles in connection with work • A culture of safety awareness needs to become second-nature in the workplace to be fully effective
