  1. Water Dictionary By: Kimberly Lamelas

  2. Adhesion • Adhesion- Water attaching to different substances • Gardening- The water will stick to the soil to water the plant • Part of Speech- Noun • Pronunciation- ad-hee-zhuhn

  3. Capillary Action • Capillary Action- The impulse of a liquid to rise in narrow tubes or to be attracted into tiny openings • Gardening- Water is transported up the roots of a plant through capillary action • Part of Speech- Noun • Pronunciation-kap-uh-ler-eeak-shuhn

  4. Cohesion • Cohesion- Water attaching to water • Gardening- When the watering can is being filled up then the water that is coming down is sticking to the water that is already in there • Part of Speech- Noun • Pronunciation- koh-hee-zhuhn

  5. Hydrogen Bond • Hydrogen Bond- Forming these bonds are not difficult and the bonds are frail. • Gardening- Keeps the water together so that it is available to the plants to absorb • Part of Speech- Noun • Pronunciation-hahy-druh-juhn

  6. Polarity • Polarity- A property of a molecule that it’s sides have opposite charges • Gardening- The water is absorbed into the roots of the plants • Part of Speech- Noun • Pronunciation-poh-lar-i-tee, puh

  7. Significance of Water’s Density • Density- Closeness of molecules • Gardening- Water’s density effects how easily plants will be able to absorb it. The colder water becomes, the more dense it is making it more difficult to absorb. • Part of Speech- Noun • Synonyms- Compactness, Consistency, Tightness • Pronunciation-den-si-tee

  8. Significance of Water’s Specific Heat • Specific Heat- The quantity of energy required to heat I gram of a substance by one degree Celsius • Gardening- When weather becomes cold the heat decreases, plants do not soak it up at the rate they do when its warm • Part of Speech- Noun • Pronunciation-spi-sif-ikheet

  9. Surface Tension • Surface Tension- A property of liquids • Gardening- Water allows water plants to float on top of the water as well as incects • Part of Speech- Noun • Pronunciation- sur-fis ten-shuhn

  10. Universal Solvent • Universal Solvent- Water absorbs more quickly than any other liquids • Gardening- When watering plants the water will absorb faster than if you add plant food to the water • Part of Speech- Noun • Pronunciation-yoo-nuh-vur-suhlsol-vuhnt

  11. Water Cycle • Water Cycle- the circulation of the earth’s water • Gardening- The plants take in water and give off moisture during photosynthesis. The sun evaporates the moisture from soil and plants and the water molecules rise. They return when the process starts again. • Part of Speech- Noun • Pronunciation- waw-tersahy-kuhl

  12. Fun Facts • Somewhere between 70 and 75 percent of the earth’s surface is covered with water. • The total amount of water on the earth is about 326 million cubic miles of water. • The United States uses about 346,000 million gallons of fresh water every day. • Much more fresh water is stored under the ground in aquifers than on the earth’s surface • Water dissolves more substances than any other liquid. Wherever it travels, water carries chemicals, minerals, and nutrients with it
