  1. Pump-Up • After the War of 1812, a new spirit of nationalism took hold in American society. How do you believe the national government will deal with new foreign issues?

Today’s Vocabulary • Era of Good Feelings • Time of intense national pride for Americans after the War of 1812. • Monroe Doctrine • American threat to use force if European nations try to colonize within the Western Hemisphere. • Missouri Compromise • Preserved the balance of slave to free states by setting the 36°,30’N line.

National Economic Policies • Era of Good Feelings • Nationalism rises in the U.S. after the War of 1812. • James Monroe became the 5th president and wanted to united the nation by: • Reestablished the national bank. • Helped reduce inflation. • Issued protective tariffs. • Taxed imports to protect American manufacturers. • Created an American System • Made internal improvements to transportation.

  5. Marshall…..again • McCulloch v. Maryland • Maryland tried to tax the Bank of the U.S. • Marshall reinforced the elastic clause and the supremacy clause. • Gibbons v. Ogden • New York set up a steamboat monopoly. • Marshall reinforced the federal gov’t right to regulate interstate commerce and the supremacy clause.

Alexis de Tocqueville • Describes American Democracy with limitless energy, capable of doing anything. • “Americans all consider society as a body in a state of improvement…in which nothing is, or ought to be, permanent…America is a land of wonders, in which everything is in constant motion and every change seems an improvement.”

  8. Nationalist Diplomacy • Seminole Indians continued to attack Southerners. • Andrew Jackson destroyed several Seminole villages and then removed the Spanish governor of Florida from power. • In 1819, Spain ceded all of Florida to the U.S. in the Adams-Onis Treaty.

  9. The Monroe Doctrine • Declared that Europe should stay out of the Western Hemisphere. • U.S. would stay out of European affairs. • U.S. would use force if necessary to implement this. • Bluff b/c U.S. doesn’t really have the army needed to do this.

Compromises over Slavery • Missouri wanted to be admitted as a state within the U.S. • Should it be a slave or free state? • Missouri Compromise of 1820 • Main enters as free state. • Missouri enters as slave state. • 36°, 30’ Line • No slavery allowed above this line. • Slavery is allowed below this line.

Classwork • 1st- You will color a map of the Missouri Compromise. • 2nd- You will use the internet to research the effect of the Missouri Compromise. • 3rd- You will read arguments written by congressmen for and against slavery. • 4th- You will decide if the expansion of slavery is beneficial for America or if slavery should be banned. Present your beliefs using tagxedo.com.
