It also reduced shipping time and shipping rates between the East and the West.
FACT TWOCanals • Canals connected major trading and manufacturing centers, but they were very expensive to make and they were not well-maintained.
FACT THREEClipper Ships • Clipper ships were sleek and tall-masted sailing ships that traveled at great speeds but eventually died out.

Why did it happen? • Canals, roads, and railroads needed to be built across the country to connect regions and markets, improving the economy. Each of the three economic regions needed a faster and more affordable way to transport goods.
