Besides, other complementary activities will be developed in the near future in Morocco such travel agencies, service areas, hotels, charter flights, etc. • At the present, we are continuing our incursion in new foreign markets such as the countries of Eastern Europe. In fact, a new investment plan is going to be implemented in Poland during 2000 involving a volume of resources exceeding the US.D. 2,000,000. • During 1999, we have operated more than 20 million kilometers in international routes, connecting 19 countries. • Alsa Grupo has its own international commercial network with more than 2,875 sales points throughout Europe. Out of these, 106 offices have on-line connection what enables the purchase of any service in real time from any of these offices, no matter where the commercial office is. • A constant pattern in our activities in foreign countries is our compromise with the role that transport plays in the development, economic growth and wealth generation by means of the integration of the regions with reduced accessibility in the general structure of the country’s economic activity.

  10. Alsa Grupo in the People’s Republic of China • In 1984, Alsa Grupo sets up in the People's Republic of China, founding the first Spanish company that started operations in the country and the first international company undertaking road passengers transport activities. • At the present time, we run 14 companies in the country with total success, in collaboration with local entrepreneurs. • Alsa Grupo has made important financial efforts in order to develop its transport companies in the People's Republic of China, and this has involved the investment of US.D.75 million in the country. • The endowment of human and material resources for the provision of the transport services in the People's Republic of China consists in 1,400 employees and more than 500 vehicles, as well as its own coach stations in Pekin (2), Tianjin, Nanjin and Shangai. • In 1999, we transported 10 million passengers in the People's Republic of China what represents a total of 24 million kilometers at 50 km/hour average speed. The average load factor of Alsa Grupo’s services has been 80% on the line Pekin-Tianjin and 50% on routes in rural areas. • The range of activities carried out in the country are basicly long distance road transport, tourist transport, transport of workers and transport for especial events, but we have diversified our operations initiating the operation of coach stations and maintenance stations that offer their services to other transport operators. • The turnover of Alsa Grupo in the People's Republic of China amounted to US.D.27 million in 1999.

  12. Other activities related to transport • Alsa Grupo, in addition to its traditional activity of transport, has dedicated a large amount of resources to the improvement and development of other activities that keep a close relationship with transport such as maintenance and reparation stations and the introduction of new technologies in the operation of the service. • The improvement and development of the maintenance stations has the aim not only of undertaking the need of maintenance and reparations of our own vehicles (that has been increasing permanently) but also to offer these services to other transport operators, not belonging to the Organisation Alsa Grupo: • All the facilities of the Organisation have the last generation of tools and machinery in order to improve the efficacy of the work carried out and also to reduce the waisted time due to break down of vehicles. • Alsa Grupo owns 24 fully equipped maintenance stations. • The total surface of the premises dedicated to maintenance amounted to 106,000 squared meters. • These stations incorporate their own source of fuel, with a global capacity of 750,000 litres. • The provision of materials for the stations is undertaken jointly for all the stations in such a way that economies of scale in purchase can be achieved by so doing.

  13. Other activities related to transport • The introduction of new tecnologies in Alsa Grupo has been a constant in its phylosophy during its long history. The most important technological innovation that has been implemented recently in Alsa Grupo was the development of a Transport Management System that embodies most of the State-of-the-art technologies in computing and telecommunications. This system has permitted to reach the following objectives: • Integration of all the informational systems, enabling the the treatment of the informationa in all the areas of the Organisation (operations, maintenance, commercialisation, finance,…) that constitutes a basic tool for the integral management of the business. • Endow the commercial network of the Organisation with a global system that permits the sale of the product in real time, by the interconnection of the terminals of the network. • Optimisation of the resources, material as well as human, adapting the inputs to the real needs of the actual demand. • Operative and strategic planning. • Ease the transference of information among the different parts of the Organisation (Internet and Intranet). • Provide flexibility to the management system establishing the possibility of integration of external tools belonging to other organisations. • It incorporates the use of smart cards on board that, at the same time that facilitating the payment to the passengers (it substitutes the money), enables the electronic ticketing, making it easier the computation of the revenues and improving its control.

  15. Complementary activities to transport • Alsa Grupo has pursued a diversification policy in different fields, complementary to transport services. The aim of this strategy is to offer to its customers the possibility of acquiring other services that they will probably need in the different phases of the trip. • Alsa Grupo diversification policy is mainly focused on three types of activities: • Travel agencies • Coach stations • Service & rest areas • Travel agencies: • In 1965, Alsa Grupo starts its activity in the travel agency sector by means of the aquisition of the travel agency VIACA that had one office located in Madrid. • At the moment, Alsa Grupo has 19 travel agencies in Spain and 5 more will be opened within the next months. It also owns another 19 agencies in different European countries. • The travel agencies constitute a formula for the development of transport by means of the commercialisation of tourist circuits, excursions, rent-a-car with or without driver, charter flights,… • It is a way of widening the range of services that the conventional traveller will need in the different stages of the trip.

  16. Complementary activities to transport • Coach stations: • The need to look for a service with a high standard of quality for the passenger in the fixed facilities forced Alsa Grupo to promote in several cities the building of coach stations. • Additionally to the increase in the service quality, the aquisition of coach stations enables a better control of the operations. They have incredibly boosted Alsa’s competitive capacity in those cities where a coach station is run by Alsa. • Nowadays, Alsa Grupo participates in the capital and management of 29 coach stations throughout Spain. • Service & rest areas: • Our aim of supplying an integral service to our customers drove us to undertake new investment projects in order to guarantee an adequate place to make a technical stop during the trip. • The services provided by Alsa Grupo in its S & R areas are: • Cafeteria • Restaurant • Shop • Hotel • At the present, we have 3 S & R areas in operation in Spain, and another three will be built in the next 5 years.
