  3. “PLIRM” Plirm is a mnemonic device that can be used to help remember the 5 Themes of Geography. Each letter of the word “plirm” (rhymes with “worm”) is one of the five themes: • Place • Location • Interaction (Human-Environment) • Region • Movement

  4. PLACE: Human Characteristics of a Place: People change the environment by building roads, building dams, etc. Physical Characteristics of a Place: Landforms, bodies of water, climate, plant and animal life are some of the physical features of a place.

  5. LOCATION Absolute Location: EXACT Latitude and Longitude Brasilia – the capital of Brazil 16˚S, 48˚W

  7. ABSOLUTE LOCATION using latitude and longitude readings

  8. LOCATION Relative Location: Gives the location of a place relative to some known landmark. We find the location of a place by telling how far and in what direction it is from somewhere else. Geisler Middle School is in Walled Lake. It is on West Pontiac Trail just east of Beck Rd. There is a McDonald’s and a CVS store on Beck Rd. There are grey apts. across from the school.

  10. Human Characteristics of a Place: People change the environment by building roads, building dams, etc.

  13. REGIONS Regions vary according to the characteristics we use to identify them: climate, economic activities (farming & manufacturing), cultural traits (language, religion, and food), and political divisions
