  15. CELJE • Is the third-largest town in Slovenia, • population: about 50,000, • pleasant town on the banks of the Savinja river, • surrounded by hills, • it has a rich natural and cultural heritage and also a remarkable history, • during the Roman period, Celje was • known as Celeia.

HISTORY • Celje is a very old city, • at the time of the Celts, the place was known as Kelea, • in 15 BC the settlement was incorporated in the Roman Empire and it was known as Celeia, • in that time Celeia was called a small Troy and through Celeia led a Roman road from Aquileia to Pannonia, • the first mention of Celje in the Middle Ages was under the name of Cylie, • the town was the seat of the Counts of Celje in 14th and 15th century, • after their death the region was inherited by the Habsburgs of Austria, • In 15th century they built a city wall, which are defended them against the Turks

  18. CITY SIGHTS • The Old Castle • In that castle a dynasty of the Counts of Celje lived, • it was built in the second half of the 12th century, • it offers a beautiful view over Celje and its surroundings, • the largest fortress in Slovenia, • the biggest historical tourist attraction of Celje.

  19. Prince’s Mansion • In the beginning of the 15th century this was a residence of the Counts of Celje, • after their death it was turned into barracks, • today, you can visit here the archeological exhibition site Celeia – a town under the town

  20. Celje Hall • It was built at the beginning of the last century by Celje’s German population • this building was the centre of cultural life for German residents until the end of the First World War • it was originally known as the German house

  21. National Hall • It hosts the city authorities • It was built in the 19th century as a cultural, political and social centre of the Slovenian people in Celje

  22. Šmartinsko lake • Is a popular destination for fishing, picnics, zorbing, boating… • you can also walk around the lake on a beautiful walking path.
