UN DISABLED CONVENTION 30/03/2007 The principles of the UN Convention for disabled signed by 81 states on its first day on 30/03/2007 includes the equal rights for disabled, the respect for inherent dignity, individual autonomy, non-discrimination, inclusion in society, acceptance of disability as part of human diversity and humanity, equality of opportunity and respect for the evolving capacities of children with disabilities and respect for the right of children with disabilities to preserve their identities. Specific measures which are necessary to accelerate or achieve equality of persons with disabilities was considered in GDCO with its partners to make the disabled UN convention true in sudan.. www.gedarefcity.org

  4. Gedaref digital city Org. (GDCO) Gedaref digital city organization (GDCO) is NGOs established early 2005. It is a non political organization but it has a partnership with the government, other national & international organizations, donors and supporters based on the benefit of the community. It is the first digital city in Sudan . It is the winner of information for development award (i4d 2007 awards) in e-India august 2007 at new Delhi. It has strong partnership with the great people of Eindhoven through the digital city of Eindhoven (DSE). Gedaref city has twinning (partinership) with eindhoven more than 20 years. www.gedarefcity.org

  6. PROJECTS 1- electronic (digital) medical records 2- e-farmer 3- training students web design. 4- Gedaref university support 5- bridging digital divide, training and capacity building, and fighting poverty and inclusion. www.gedarefcity.org

  7. Challenges & problems 1/ ICT is not part of disabled culture 2/ poor infra structure and High cost of ICT equipment 3/ Lacking of strategic and executable plans 4/ most of them are very poor and have financial problems. 5/ Community & official interaction www.gedarefcity.org

  8. Why GDCO deal with disables? Disabled individuals are still excluded from many areas of life including information technologies (IT) many of them are unemployed and depend on their families. GDCO deal with them because 1/ ICT training is an important (economically and socially) 2/ more than 99% are very poor and they can not access ICT. 3/ ICT is not part of their culture and make them able to access it. 4/ Inclusion or integration in the community 5/ help them to be self dependent and help their families. 6/fighting poverty through ICT. 7/ another language (e-mail & chat ) 8/ achieving some of millennium digital goals (MDGs) www.gedarefcity.org

  9. What GDCO do with disabled? 1- GDCO train them for free (capacity building) 2- GDCO provide them with free computers (at home) 3- GDCO establish Telecentres for every group to help them sustain the life and be self dependent. 4- inclusion www.gedarefcity.org

WHAT DISABLED ACHIEVMENTS 1/ we train the disabled for free 2/ GDCO gives them free computers to continue training at home 3/ establishing Telecentres for them which help both the disabled (revenue) and the community () and get them employed .. 4-Integration & inclusion of the disabled in the community through these Telecentres which are opened for community for nominal price and also talking them to attend national and international conference (Abu Dhabi) 5-training and capacity building to bridging the digital divide, and ready ness for employing.within the disable. www.gedarefcity.org

  11. 6-showing people ICT (computer) learning is not that difficult 7- Exchange of cultural knowledge and sharing experiences and help them discus their problems through the internet.. 8- we trained 8 of the disables (TOT) and they start training their colleagues in a very quick way than before and they can get a job so they shorten the period of training to one month instead of six month before. 9- GDCO is arranging for an international conference in Telecentre movement in 15 may 2008 with the coordination of ugabytes.org and telecentre.org according to the decision of 4th east Africa Telecentre leaders forum in 8 – 9th nov. 2007 in Kampala Uganda. More than 100 international Telecentre movement leaders will be invited and the main topic will be how Telecentres help disabled persons. www.gedarefcity.org

  12. 10- health insurance for the disabled. 11-creates a new source of revenue to the disable (financial support) and disabled become self dependent and help their families and colleagues. . 12- help the deaf to communicate with their families, friends and have another way of communications instead of the sign language through chatting and e-mail allover the world instead of one place www.gedarefcity.org

  13. How we get the disabled acquainted with the ICT and we achieve all these goals? GDCO achieve these things with the help of our partners especially digital city of Eindhoven (DSE) and Eindhoven private companies and volunteers (Para-digit, Brabant, Fontys university SPEG, ict-wrecker) who donated 750 computers to GDCO, another 600 PCs are on the way by the end of this year. also Gedaref state community and government and NGOs (GPWO& disabled union). also information supporting fund (ISF) represented by national telecommunication corporation (NTC) and national information centre (NIC), private companies include Zain, abushaibah establishment (Kuwait) , mahgoub awlad, canar, sudani, sudatel andmany other International organization who share knowledge & experience IDRC, Ugabytes.org, Telecentre, so thanks and appreciation to all. www.gedarefcity.org
