  2. History: The history of windsurfing dates back to the sixties of last century. It was invented by two Californians, a sailor and businessman Jim Drake, and a crazy surfer Hoyle Schweitzer, who combined forces of the sail and the board and created a new, unique sport. In 1968 he applied for a patent and the world learned a new discipline called "windsurfing".Schweitzer is constantly looking for better material for the manufacture of boards, which will be cheaper and more durable than fiberglass. Business owners of Dupont, one of the firms which produces surfboards, are very impressed with a new way to use their product and decided to help to promote windsurfing and making it accessible to as many people as possible.

  3. Variants: Basic windsurfing variety: Wave - wave sailing is commonly held to be the pinnacle of windsurfingwith those windsurfers capable of riding the biggest waves. There are two types of wave surfing: jumping and riding.Wave jumping involves stunts of varying levels of difficulty which are performed after the rider has jumped from the peak of an unbroken wave.Recent innovations have included combining moves whilst airborn. Wave riding, by contrast, is much closer to surfing in style, and involves the rider performing a series of top turns and cutbacks whilst riding an unbroken wave back to the shore. Freestyle - freestyle is a timed event which is judged. Freestyle is about show and competitors are judged on their creativity. Both the difficulty and the number of tricks make up the final score.Freeride - it is a typical windsurfing variant. This type of windsurfing is the most popular one among amateur and recreational windsurfers. There are no rules as to what equipment should be used here.

  4. Riders: In the world: Antoine Albeau – France Robby Naish – USA Steve Allen – Australia Tom Ashley – New Zealand Kevin Pitchard – Australia Finian Maynard – USA In Poland: Małgorzata Białecka Łukasz Grodzicki Zofia Klepacka Przemysław Miarczyński Piotr Myszka Dorota Staszewska Nina Szymczyk Wojciech Brzozowski Patrycja Lis

  5. Boards: Freeride - boards meant for comfortable recreational cruising (mostly straight-line sailing and occasional turning) at planing speed, mainly in flat waters. They typically fall into the volume range of 90 to 170 liters. The so-called freeride sailing movement diverged from course racing as more recreational sailors chose to sail freely without being constrained to sailing on courses around buoys. Formula Windsurfing Class - Shorter boards up to one meter in width, for use in Formula Windsurfing races. Wave - smaller, lighter, more maneuverable boards for use in breaking waves. Characteristically, sailors on wave boards perform high jumps while sailing against waves, and they ride the face of a wave performing narrow linked turns just like in surfing. Typical length is between 230 and 260 centimeters, and 50 to 60 centimeters in width. Freestyle -wider, higher volume boards geared specifically at performing acrobatic tricks (jumps, rotations, slides, flips and loops) on flat water. Usually 80 to 110 liters in volume, and about 240 to 250 centimeters in length, with widths frequently in excess of 60 centimeters. Slalom – shortboards aimed at top speed, rather than maneuverability or ease of use. Funboards - these often have a daggerboard, are almost as wide as Formula boards, and have plenty of volume, hence stability. They are also called „beginners boards”. Racing longboards - long board designed for windsurfers involved in racing. Mistral One Design class or the Olympic Class RS: X are the examples of these.

  6. Types of sails: • Wave - consists of 4-5 strips perfectly composing the boards of less than 3 meters. Currently, the wave sail type is very light in built. It size vary from 2.5 to 6.0 m2. Wave sails are reinforced to survive the surf, and are flat when depowered to allow riding the waves like surfers do.Freestyle - Sail of this type has a size ranging from 4.0 to 7.0 m2 and is similar in structure to the wave type. Freestyle sails are also flat when depowered, and have high low-end power to allow quick acceleration.Freeride - Freeride Sails type are extremely light and Freeride sails are all-rounders that are comfortable to use and are meant for recreational windsurfing. Sail area ranges from 4.0 to 9.0 m2. Race – racing sails provide speed at the expense of qualities like comfort or maneuverability.  The size of the sail reaches even 12.5 m2 (most of them are used in the Formula Windsurfing class). They have a solid and deep profile that was obtained by using a large amount of camber and the use of an enlarged pocket mast.

  7. Windsurfing Events: • Worldwide:In windsurfing competitions, there are the following disciplines: Olympic Windsurfing Class, Formula Windsurfing Class, Raceboard Class, Slalom Super X, Speed Racing, Freestyle, Wavesailing • In Poland: The most interesting windsurfing events coincide largely with the calendar of the Polish Cup.

  8. Dress: DRESS: Athletes or enthusiasts of the sport dress in colorful wet suits (2-3mm thick) with long legs, and additional sleeves. Garment should be closely matched, but it cannot hurt the body and hinder movement. Warm, dry suit is waterproof, has zipper and fully protect the rider from the cold breeze and waves. In the summer, the riders usually use wet suit jerseys. A rider cannot forget about sail bag.
