  2. California School Climate, Health and Learning Survey System(Cal-SCHLS) California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) California School Climate Survey (CSCS) California School Parents Survey (CSPS)

Cal-SCHLS • Will satisfy school climate survey requirements of Local Control Funding Formula • CHKS – for students grades 5, 7, 9, 11, and non-traditional • Passive consent optional for grades 7, 9, 11, and NT • All surveys may be completed online • Cost of CHKS - $0.30/student • Shortened from last year but new questions added

  4. Cal-SCHLS (2) • Surveys may be completed online • CSPS – for parents (paper version translated into 26 languages, online version is in English and Spanish) • Cost of CSPS - $500 (online), $0.30/paper survey • CSCS – for school staff • Cost of CSCS – free when also conducting CHKS

  5. Electronic Smoking Devices • E-cigarettes, e-hookahs, e-pipes . . . . . • Deliver nicotine or THC in smoke-free medium • May contain more nicotine than a cigarette • Come in a variety of kid-friendly flavors • Use among school-aged youth has doubled in last 2 years • 75% of users also smoke cigarettes • http://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2013/p0905-ecigarette-use.html

Recommended Changes to District Smoke-Free Policies • Addresses the emerging problem of student use of e-cigarettes • Language to include electronic smoking devices in BP 3513 Smoke-free Workplace and BP 5131 Tobacco-Use Prevention – Students • Sample policy language proposed by CDE is posted on SHaPE.LACOE.Edu under TUPE, Tobacco-Free Certification

  7. Tobacco-Free Certification • Sends a positive pro-health message to the school community • Required of all applicants for TUPE funding • Information is posted on the SHaPE website or by contacting Glenn Dodd at 562-922-8963 or dodd_glenn@lacoe.edu

TOBACCO USE IS PROHIBITED Signs • Tobacco-free district certification requires signage at every pedestrian and vehicle entrance to every school district property • SHaPE can provide 9” x 12” heavy gauge aluminum signs that read TOBACCO USE IS PROHIBITED ON SCHOOL PROPERTY AT ALL TIMES • Signs are free by contacting Glenn Dodd at 562-922-8963 or dodd_glenn@lacoe.edu

  9. TUPE Tier 1 Grant • Provides $1500 support to implement the California Healthy Kids Survey in years 1 and 3 • Open to school districts and independent charter schools • Eligibility requirement – Tobacco-Free certified before June 30, 2013 • http://www.cde.ca.gov/fg/fo/r8/tupetier161214rfa.asp

  10. TUPE Tier 1 Consortium Grant • Provides support to implement the California Healthy Kids Survey in years 1 and 3 • Open to school districts and independent charter schools with combined ADA in grades 7, 9, 11, and Non-traditional < 5000 • Eligibility requirement – Tobacco-Free certified before June 30, 2013 • Contact Glenn Dodd at 562-922-8963

  12. TUPE Mini-Grants • SHaPE will fund up to 15 mini-grants of $1500 each for implementation of Project-Based Youth Advocacy • Money can be used for salary or stipend, benefits, student transportation, materials • Limitations: not currently TUPE-funded, one school per district
