  2. Why year 7? • Enthusiasm – less peer pressure or embarassment • Fresh start – new to the school • Less resistance – they will consider speaking Target Language as “the norm” • Implications for KS4 take-up • Confidence • Love of language

  3. Student Survey • We asked about student confidence in speaking the Target language in the classroom in October and December and compared the results.

Benefits • Increased confidence • Higher expectations • Willingness to try • Enthusiasm • Higher achievement • Spontaneous interest from other classes • Being able to transfer language across topics • Enjoyment of the language – teacher and pupil These benefits were clearly seen when comparing 2 year 7 classes in the same school and with the same teacher where only one class was involved in the project.

  16. Conclusions • Perseverance is the key – keep going! • Reward the pupils for trying to speak in target language • Increase expectations • Little by little – build up the target language • It really is WORTH it! The benefits outweigh the slog! • Revisit classroom language regularly
