  2. Introduction and Definition AnInsulin Pumpis amachinethat delivers certainamountsofINSULIN. Insulin is a hormone that helps muscles receiveglucose(a type of sugar), just under the skin. Insulinis requiredforthe treatment of people who have themedical condition of type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes. WithoutInsulinmany people withDiabeteswould go blind, lose limbs and quite often die.There are many ways to deliver theinsulinto people withdiabetes, such asneedlesandnasalsprays, butthe most recent invention ininsulindelivery istheinsulinpump.

  3. Invention and Innovation The insulin pump has changed a lot over the years . The first everpumpwas made in the 1960's by Dean Kamem. It was ratherlike a backpack giving the name "the big blue brick" andwasshockingly expensive. Sadly it had almost no settings. The big blue brickwas almost a danger! Pump innovations led to smaller and smallerdeviceswith moreandmore functionsuntil the firstFDAapprovedinsulin pumpwas sold byMinimed in 1983. Nowadays pumps havebolus calculators, alarm clocks, language settings, sensors capable of reading B.S.L.'s, basal settingsas well as compatibility with computers which can give an insight upon thepumpsettings. These newsettingscan enablethe life ofdiabeticto be easier.butof course there is always roomforimprovement. I myself would recommend a more improved sensor that instead of measuringinterstitial fluidit measures the actualblooditself as well as a wiredorimprovedwirelessconnection to thepump

  5. Benefit – less stabbing Insulinpumpsare much improved on simpleinjections. As theinsulinis delivered from areservoirthroughtubingto asubcutaneous cannula, the number of times adiabeticisstabbedis reduced. Forexample, if you were havingneedlesover 6 days you would bestabbed30 times; when using apumpthis is only 2 times.

  6. Benefit – normal eating Theinsulinflow is more natural using apump. With apump, a small amount ofinsulinis delivered all the time as a basal dose, just like what happens with normal pancreas.When you eat you need to add in a bolus dose ofinsulinmatched to the amountandtype ofcarbohydratesthere are in the meal. This happens automatically if yourpancreasworks. If you havediabetesandare usingneedlesthen you need to have a certain amount offoodat a specific time to match the dose ofinsulininjected. This is reallyhardforkidsandtotallyboring. You can't just decide to eat something else as someone is having a partyorto sleep inandskip a meal - you have to stick to the eating planandtimetable. Pumps are a blessingandimprove the quality of life -especiallyforkids withdiabetes.
