  2. An invitation • Please use this overview as an introduction to IRA’s position statement. To find out more, read and download the full statement at www.reading.org • The last slides ask you to reflect and make an action plan for integrating technology in your teaching. You may want to do this with a colleague or school team. • Share your views by posting a message to the ROL Online Communities listserv

  3. Preparing students for the literacy futures they deserve • Nature of literacy is changing as new technologies develop • Future success depends on skills in new literacies of information and communication technologies (ICT)

  4. Examples of ICT • Internet • Word processing • Webpage authoring • E-mail • PowerPoint and other presentation applications Visit ROL’s Teachers’ Voices to learn from teachers who are leading the way in using the Internet and ICT

  5. New responsibility and skills for literacy educators • New responsibility for effectively integrating technology in literacy instruction • New skills needed in ICT and technology integration Teachers get together to learn new technical skills and teaching strategies.

  6. Students have the right to… • A literacy curriculum that integrates new literacies of ICT into instructional programs These students are learning to read novels in digital and print formats.

  7. Students have the right to… • Instruction that develops critical literacies essential to effective information use To find out more about critical literacies, visit ROL’s New Literacies department

  8. Students have the right to… • Assessment practices in literacy that include reading on the Internet and writing using word-processing software In this class, students read, write, and are assessed on the computer.

  9. Students have the right to… • Opportunities to learn safe and responsible use of information and communication technologies Students attending Internet Camp learn how to evaluate websites.

Reflect and plan action • How prepared are you to integrate new ICT literacies in your teaching and learning? • What kinds of professional development and technical support do you need to teach these new ICT literacies successfully? • Do students and teachers in your school and classroom have adequate access to computers and the Internet?

  12. Reflect and plan action • Make an action plan outlining steps you can take to develop your skills and integrate technology successfully into your teaching and learning. • Work with colleagues to develop an action plan for your grade or school.
