What is Amateur Radio • Experimental Radio Communications Service • Design, build, operate, modify and experiment. • Technical communication through use of spectrum. • Non-commercial – no financial gain hobby! • Challenge, self-improvement, collecting, educative, contesting, etc. • Many, many modes of operation to keep you interested.

  3. Amateur Radio Remembrance Day Contest 2006 – 24 hour operation

  4. New Licence Structure • Hams need a licence to transmit on air. • New foundation licence. • New handbook available. • Easy entry level - theory & practical assessment only – low power –limited operating bands.

  7. What can you do with AR? • Experimentation – • Optical • Antennas • Electronics • Distance • Meteorscatter • EME • Etc, etc, etc

  8. What can you do with AR? • AR Direction Finding • - (for fun and contests) • Field weekends • - operate portable/mobile • Foxhunting (hidden transmitters, EPIRB) • Contesting • Projects • Kit construction

  9. What can you do with AR? Internet Repeater Linking Project (IRLP) – the world on a handheld. • Echolink – computer to computer via radio. • Meteorscatter – bouncing signals off meteor trails. • Earth Moon Earth (EME) - Bouncing signals off the moon.

  10. What can you do with AR? Google Earth Comes Alive! • Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS)

  11. What can you do with AR? • WICEN – Communications for Targa Tasmania, Subaru Safari Rally, Jamboree on the Air and Community events

  12. What can you do with AR? • Morse Code - where it all started • Contests Almost every weekend • Homebrewing - Circuit experimentation electronics

  13. What can you do with AR? • Amateur TV - Wednesday night – Domain Clubrooms - Low end of UHF TV band • Slow Scan TV - pictures via radio

  14. What can you do with AR? • Repeaters and Beacons • Club sponsored • Mobile and Portable • Field Days • Nets • Emergency and backup ops eg. 1967 Bushfires, Broadmarsh fires New Orleans 911

  15. What can you do with AR? • Satellite operation – over 15 operational amateur satellites orbiting the earth

The Future for AR • Future is really bright for amateur radio • Internet technology expanding horizons • History of meeting the challenges • Amateur numbers steadily increasing • Progressive National Representation & Support • Greater involvement in emergency operation • It’s a great hobby – but then I’m biased – why don’t YOU try it??
