  1. Charge: • Your task is to develop core ideas/projects for an $8-10M ($1.25-1.5M per year for 5 years) NIH Center proposal. • Specifically, you should consider the following questions

  2. Magnetic Imaging and Spectroscopy and Magnetic, Biomagnetic and Bioelectric Devices • Group Members • Mathew White- MRI, fMRI • Kim Espy - neural • Sanjay Singh - Epilepsy • Shadi othman – MRI and MRE • Hamid Vakilzadian- Modeling • Lim Nguyen – signal processing, electronics • Linxia Gu – multiscale multiphysics modeling and vascular mechanics • Sina Balkir – integrated circuit design • Ruqiang Feng – engineering mechanics • Senem Velipasalar- image and video processing • Sy-Hwang Liou – nanomagnetism, magnetic sensors

  3. Briefly describe the core projects your group would design for the Center. Please dream big. • Analysis of patient’s movement to separate epileptic from non-epileptic seizures (from videos). • Prediction and detection of seizures based on analysis of electrical brain activity by mathematical modelling. • Investigate nanomagnetic particles to enhance magneto ecephalography • Brian Center: center for studying the structural, mechanical, electrical, and functional properties of the brain.

  4. Identify the key faculty from from both campuses to involve in these projects. Include their strengths. (UNMC on next slide) • UNL FacultyStrengths • Shadi othman – MRI and MRE • Hamid Vakilzadian- Modeling • Lim Nguyen – signal processing • Linxia Gu – multiscale modeling and vascular mechanics • Sina Balkir - Integrated circuit design • Ruqiang Feng – Blast physics & testing, mechanical property characterization • Senem Velipasalar- image and video processing, automatic activity analysis from videos • Sy-Hwang Liou magnetic contrast enhancement

  5. Identify the key faculty from from both campuses to involve in these projects. Include their strengths. • UNMC Faculty Strengths • Mathew White MRI, fMRI, diffusion tensor imaging • Sanjay Singh Neurology, Epilepsy, EEG, MEG.

  6. Identify external academic partners & expertise or equipment resources/strengths that are needed to accomplish these projects. • We have the MEG, 3T MRI, high field MRI animal scanner, Video EG monitoring unit, MIMECS, ABAQUS, shock wave testing facility. • Industry partner for nanomagnetic enhanced MEG and pharmaceutical partner

  7. List potential industry/foundation partners (think broadly) and what they would contribute. Include reasons why they would be interested. • NIH, CURE, Epilepsy Foundation of America, MS foundation, DOD

  8. Describe how you would link the Center to other campus resources. • As before
