Verse of the Day • Matthew 5:43-45 • “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”

Apocrypha – Hidden Books • Tobias, Judith, the Wisdom of Solomon, Baruch, and Maccabees, remain in the Catholic Bible. • First Esdras, Second Esdras, Epistle of Jeremiah, Susanna, Bel and the Dragon, Prayer of Manasseh, Prayer of Azariah, and Laodiceans are not today considered part of the Catholic apocrypha.

Student will be able to: • Discern the lessons to be learned from Nehemiah's leadership in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem; • Contrast the Jewish remnant who returned to rebuild Jerusalem with those who remained in Babylon; • Explore the long-range effects of the Jews' rejection of the Samaritans' offer to help; • Examine how God worked through Haggai and Zechariah to complete the work of rebuilding the temple; • Compare the captivity and restoration of the Jews to the Christian life today. • Contrast the Samaritan religion with Judaism during the postexilic period; • Explain how the teachings and traditions of the rabbis led to extreme legalism and eventual rejection of Christ; • Identify ways in which the spirit of legalism still exists in the Christian community; • Describe the use and function of Pharisees and Sadducees during the intertestamental period; • Explore the Maccabean victory over Syria and the reemergence of Jewish nationalism; • Examine the origin and use of the Septuagint during the intertestamental and New Testament periods; • Describe how Hellenistic thought and culture affected Judaism; Identify events that led up to the rule of Herod the Great.
