  1. Lab water turbine By Kristie Lam

  2. How can you prove newton’s 3rd law using a water turbine? If I understand the principles of force, pressure, and Newton’s 3rd law, then the water turbine will work and I will be successful.

  3. Materials You will need: • ½ gallon carton • Yarn (4 ft) • 7 deciliters H2O • Tree • Nail • Bucket • Cps

  4. Procedure • Poke a hole in the bottom right corner of the four slides of the carton • Poke another hole at the top of the carton • Tie a string through the hole, then tie it to the tree, but be sure you can touch the top of the carton • Have a person put their fingers over the four holes while you pour H2O into the carton • Make detailed observations

  5. ExpErament: Try 1

  6. Expirament: Try 2

  7. Observations • Spun clockwise • More H2O, more pressure, more force, spun more/faster • Add H2O-spins-when yarn is all spun, it goes other way

  8. Analysis #1 In what direction did the turbine spin? Why? • It spun clockwise because the holes were on the bottom right corner

  9. Analysis #2 Can this experamentbe used to prove Newton’s laws ½? Why or why not? • Law 1: The carton was still, but when I added water, it started to spin. • Law 2: Mass=water acceleration=pressure it released In short, yes.

  10. Conclusion I learned and understood that the more pressure that is applied, the more force there would be. As for Newton’s 3rd law, because I poured water into the carton, the carton spun.

  11. Special thanks… to the minions!
