  2. Topic/Objective: • Our objective is to define and to provide examples of key terms as they apply to the documentary “God Grew Tired of Us.” • Note: We will be using AVID Cornell Notes as our graphic organizer!

  3. Essential Question: • In what ways does the American dream manifest itself in American life?

  4. Question #1: • What is the definition of cultural identity? • Name at least one example. • Draw the chart on your notes column and fill in.

  6. Question #2: • What is the definition of assimilation? • Name at least two examples of this from the documentary.

  7. Question #3: • What is the definition of acculturation? • Name at least two examples from the documentary.

  8. Question #4: • What is a cultural landscape? • Define and name at least one general example.

  9. Question #5: • What is a cultural marker? • Define and name at least one general example. • Can you think of an example of a cultural marker for the people of Sudan?

  10. Answer and Define. • Using classroom dictionaries, Google, or dictionary.com on your phone, look up the answers! • You may work with a partner as needed. • Be prepared to share your answers in class tomorrow.

Check your answers! • Cultural Identity- the identity of a group or culture, or of an individual as far as one is influenced by one’s belonging to a group or culture. • Can you fill out the identity chart for one of The Lost Boys? What correct answers could you create for the category of Other?

Check your answers! • Assimilate-to try to absorb into the customs, attitudes, etc. of a group, nation, or the like; adapt or adjust. • (On a side note, when pertaining to food, assimilate means to absorb.) • What examples did you come up with from the documentary? What did the boys do to try to fit in?

  13. Check your answers! • Acculturation-two cultures coexist together but are still two distinct groups. As they mix or blend, the two cultures may clash or experience conflicts. • What happened as the American and Sudanese people tried to blend together? Was it rough at times?

  14. Check your answers! • Cultural landscape-the visible human imprint activity on the landscape; how people have changed and shaped the environment such as buildings, fences, churches, statues, etc. • Examples the Ancient Egyptian pyramids, the Roman Coliseum, etc.

  15. Check your answers! • Cultural marker-It can be an event or something that reveals societal norms. • It can be defined as something very specific that distinguishes one culture from another (i.e. breakdancing in the 80s, fashion trends such as bell bottoms in the 60s, the Civil War, 9-11) • What would be a cultural marker for The Lost Boys?
