  1. Petronas Towers Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

  2. The Demographics of Malaysia • Population of 28,250,500 •  44th most populated country in the world • 5.72 million Malaysians live in East Malaysia  • 22.5 million live in Peninsular Malaysia • The population distribution is uneven, with some 20 million of 28 million citizens concentrated in Peninsular Malaysia, that has an area of 131,598 square kilometres (50,810.27 sq mi).

  3. Major Cities • Kuala Lumpur is the capital and largest city of Malaysia • Although many executive and judicial branches of the federal government have moved to Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur is the seat of the Parliament of Malaysia, making it the country's legislative capital • Johor Bahru is the second largest city and second largest urban area in the country. It is close to Singapore, and receives more than 60% of the country's annual 16 million foreign tourists • George Town, situated in the state of Penang, is the third largest city and fifth largest urban area in Malaysia. It used to be Malaysia's largest city until the 1970s when Kuala Lumpur became the capital.

  4. Petronas Towers • Designed by Argentine architect César Pelli and Filipino-Malaysian Engineer Deejay Cerico • Started in 1992 & ended in 1998 • Cost $1.6 billion • Has 88 floors & 78 elevators • It was later surpassed by the Taipei 101 Tower

  5. Design • Because of the depth of the bedrock, the buildings were built on the world's deepest foundations. • All 88-floor of the towers are constructed largely of reinforced concrete, with a steel and glass facade designed to resemble motifs found in Islamic art • Due to a lack of steel and the huge cost of importing steel, the towers were constructed on a cheaper radical design of super high-strength reinforced concrete

  6. Skybridge • between the two towers on 41st and 42nd floors •  highest 2-story bridge in the world • It is not attached to the main structure, but is designed to slide in and out to prevent it from breaking •  It also provides some structural support to the towers for when they sway several feet in towards and away from each other during high winds •  The bridge is 170 m (558 ft) above the ground and 58 m (190 ft) long, weighing 750 tons

  7. Events • Thousands of people were evacuated on 12 September 2001 after a bomb threat was phoned in the day after 9/11 • 4 November 2005, a fire broke out in the cinema complex of the Suria KLCC shopping centre below the Petronas Towers, there was no injuries • morning of 1 September 2009, French urban climber, Alain "Spiderman" Robert, using only his bare hands and feet and with no safety devices, scaled to the top of Tower Two in just under 2 hours after two previous efforts had ended in arrest

  8. Fun Facts • The Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the world for six years, until Taipei 101 was completed in 2004 • Tower 2 ran into problems when it was discovered that it was leaning 25 millimeters off from vertical • The skybridge is open to all visitors, but tickets are limited to about 1000 people per day • Visitors are only allowed on the 41st floor as the 42nd floor can only be used by the tenants of the building • The skybridge also acts as a safety device, so that in the event of a fire or other emergency in one tower, tenants can evacuate by crossing the skybridge to the other tower • Remain the tallest twin buildings in the world ever built, surpassing the World Trade Center

  9. Review The Pretronas Towers are located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Remains the largest Twin Tower building in the world Cost$1.6 billion Is currently 1,483 ft tall Designed by César Pelli
