  2. Library Service in Secondary & Primary Schools Background To improve the quality of secondary & primary education Appoint an additional non-graduate teacher to work full time as a school librarian. Secondary Schools started in 1979 Primary Schools started in 1998 Special Schools started in 2000

  3. Basic Requirement • The school librarian should normally have a minimum of two years' post qualification teaching experience and service as a school librarian will count as teaching experience for promotion purposes.

  4. Appointment • All teacher-librarians are required to complete two years in- service part-time diploma for teacher-librarian training course jointly organized by Education Bureau and HKU SPACE. • In fact, most of the school principals like to employ those who are degree holder in education and also trained with experience teacher-librarians.

  5. Topics outline • The role and function of the school library • Library Management • The library collection • Organization of knowledge • Information and reference services • Curriculum development and the school library • (a) Library skill instruction, reading schemes, display and extension activities. • (b) liaising and coordinating with subject teachers in planning library programmes, learning projects and use of library materials.

  6. Duties Descriptions in 1979 • (a) general management of the school library; • (b) acquiring, processing, maintaining and circulating library books • and other resources materials; • (c) co-ordinating the efforts of teaching staff in planning and • organizing library programmes to support and enrich the school curriculum; • (d) planning and developing reading programmes in consultation with subject teachers • (e) conducting library periods and helping pupils to use library • facilities; • (f) advising the Principal and other teachers on matters concerning the school library and serving on Committees related to the acquisition and use of Library resources; • (g) other appropriate duties as required by the Head of school.

  8. Payment Scale in 2007 • All payment are according to the Hong Kong Services Payment • CM $16,910 to $30,445 monthly • AM $31,8355 to $38,265 monthly • GM $16,910 to $45,970 monthly

  9. Other Benefits • Long holiday e.g. Summer vacation, Christmas, Chinese New Year & Easter holiday • Fruitful provident fund e.g. CM for service of thirty years will gain around 3.8 million in 2009 retirement (For Aided Schools) • http://www.hkptu.org/mainindex.php?content=/engptu/index.htm • Sick leave 48days in a year and can be accumulated to not more than 168 days
