  1. Prophet Jesus (pbuh) in Qur’an Sinan Yilmaz Dialogue International

  2. Overview • Jesus(pbuh) as a prophet. • The miraculous conception of prophet Jesus(pbuh) in the womb of his mother • Trinity, Is Jesus(pbuh) the son-of-God? • Crucifixion of Jesus? • Miracles of Jesus(pbuh) Dialogue International

  3. Jesus(pbuh) as a prophet • Muslims honor and respect Jesus, son of Mary (peace be upon him and all of God's prophets).  • Muslims believe that he was one in a long line of honorable prophets, who taught his people to worship and obey the One True Lord, the Creator.  • Muslims believe that the message Jesus preached was one and the same as the message that all of the prophets brought to their people:  “Worship Almighty God, and Him Alone.  Have faith, and live your life according to that faith.” Dialogue International

  4. Jesus(pbuh) as a prophet • Of all the prophets, Jesus is probably the most written about in the Qur'an.  • The Qur'an makes it very clear that Jesus was a prophet, chosen by God to teach his people, but he is neither associated with nor part of God Himself. • He performed miracles, by the grace and power of God alone.  Dialogue International

  5. Jesus(pbuh) as a prophet The Qur'an describes him: • He [Jesus] was no more than a servant. We granted Our favor to him, and we made him an example to the Children of Israel.... • When Jesus came with clear signs, he said, "Now have I come to you with Wisdom, and in order to make clear to you some of the points on which you dispute. Therefore, fear Allah and obey me. • For Allah, He is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a Straight Way.“ (Qur'an:  Al-Zukhruf 43:59, 63-64) Dialogue International

  6. The miraculous conception of Prophet Jesus(pbuh) - I • The Qur'an speaks of Mary (called Miriam in Arabic) not only as the mother of Jesus, but as a righteous woman in her own right. • There is even a chapter of the Qur'an named for her (the 19th chapter of the Qur'an). • "Relate in the Book (the story of) Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place in the East. She placed a screen (to screen herself) from them. Then We sent her our angel, and he appeared before her as a man in all respects. Dialogue International

  7. The miraculous conception of Prophet Jesus(pbuh) - II • She said, 'I seek refuge from you to God Most Gracious! Do not come near me, if you fear God!' He said, 'No, I am only a messenger from your Lord, (to announce) to you the gift of a holy son.' She said, 'How shall I have a son, seeing that no man has touched me, and I am not unchaste?‘ "He said, 'So (it will be). Your Lord says, 'That is easy for Me, and (We wish) to appoint him as a Sign unto men, and a Mercy from Us. It is a matter (so) decreed' " • (19:16-21, the Chapter of Mary) Dialogue International

  8. The miraculous conception of Prophet Jesus(pbuh) - III • 3:45. Behold! the angels said: "O Mary! God gives thee glad tidings of a Word from Him; his name will be Jesus, the Son of Mary, held in honor in this world and the Hereafter, and amongst those close to God." • 3:46. "He shall speak to the people in childhood and in maturity, and he shall be amongst the righteous." • 3:47. She said: "O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man had touched me?" He said: "Even so: God creates what He wills; when He has decreed a plan, He but says to it `Be,' and it is done!" Dialogue International

  9. Is Jesus the son-of-God? • 4:171. Christ Jesus, the Son of Mary, was (no more than) an Apostle of God, and His Word which He bestowed on Mary, and a Spirit proceeding from Him; so believe in God and His Apostles. Say not "Trinity"; desist, it will better for you. For Allah is one God; Glory be to Him; Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is God as a Disposer of affairs. • 3:59. The similitude of Jesus before God is as that of Adam: He created him from dust, then said to him, "Be"; and he was. Dialogue International

  10. Crucifixion of Jesus? • 3:55. Behold! God said: "O Jesus! I will take thee and raise thee to Myself, and clear thee of the falsehood of those who blaspheme; I will make those who follow superior to those who reject faith, to the day of Resurrection; then shall ye all return unto Me, and I will judge between you of the matters wherein ye dispute." Dialogue International

  11. Crucifixion of Jesus? • 4:157. That they boasted: "We killed Christ Jesus, the Son of Mary, the Apostle of God"; but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no certain knowledge but only conjecture to follow. For a surety they killed him not; • 4:158. Nay, God raised him up unto Himself; and God is Exalted in Power, Wise; Dialogue International

  12. Miracles of Jesus(pbuh) • The following verses describe some of the miracles (by God's leave and permission) of Jesus. • 3:49. And he will be appointed a Prophet to the Children of Israel proclaiming: `I have come to you with a Sign from your Lord. In that I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by God's leave. And I heal those born blind, and the lepers, and I quicken the dead, by God's leave. And I declare to you what ye eat, and what ye store in your houses. Surely therein is a Sign for you if ye did believe. Dialogue International

  13. Miracles of Jesus(pbuh) … • 5:113. Then will God say: "O Jesus the Son of Mary! Recount My favor to thee and to thy mother. Behold! I strengthened thee with the Holy Spirit, so that thou did speak to the people in childhood and in maturity. Behold! I taught thee The Book and Wisdom, The Torah and the Gospel. And behold! thou make out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by my leave. Dialogue International

  14. Miracles of Jesus(pbuh) … • 5:113 (continued) And thou breath into it, and it becomes a bird, by my leave And thou heal those born blind, and the lepers,by my leave And behold! Thou bring forth the dead, by my leave. And behold! I did restrain the Children of Israel from (violence to) thee when thou did show them the Clear Signs, and the unbelievers among them said: `This is nothing but evident magic.'
