What is a “Leader”? • Leadership is influencing people – by providing purpose, direction, and motivation – while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organisation. • Influencing getting people to do what you want • Purpose giving people a reason to do things • Direction communicating the way you want it done • Motivating making people want to give 100% • Operating taking actions to achieve the goals • Improving sustain strength & remove weaknesses

  4. Leadership Responsibilities • Task • carrying out tasks or activities • meeting deadlines • achieving goals • Team • achieving organisational objectives • meeting performance standards • Individual • developing the capabilities of individuals

  5. Leadership and Command • Command includes: • the authority and responsibility for • using available resources effectively • people • equipment • time • money • planning and organising, • directing, coordinating, and controlling, • health, safety and welfare, • morale and discipline.

  6. Command Authority • Authority (power) comes from: • Legitimate Power: Granted by some authority • Coercive Power: The Stick / fear of punishment • Reward Power: The Carrot / offer of reward • Expert Power: Skills, experience, education • Referent Power: Admiration, respect • Alternatively … • Charisma: Personality, charm, grace

Successful Delegation • Define the Task • Select the individual • Assess ability and training needs • Explain the reasons • State required results • Consider resources required • Agree deadlines • Support and communicate • Feedback on results Specific, Measurable, Agreed, Timebound, Realistic

Delegation Failures • Instructions may not be correctly understood • Your team may not have the ability to perform as directed • The task may require additional supervision • Your instructions may be contrary to the team’s self-interests • Your instructions are stupid • You interfere with their performance of the task • You undermine them in their performance • You keep changing priorities

Successful Communication • Progressive • Presented in a logical, progressive manner • Accurate • Information accurate and up to date • Visual • Points supported by appropriate visual aids • Effective • Contains all “Must-know” information • Avoid any irrelevant information(Hold multiple briefings if necessary)
