  3. Funding Issues The Bad News There is no mandatory funding for postgraduate study (except for PGCE students). Getting on a course does not automatically entitle you to funding The Student Loans Company doesn’t support postgraduates The Good News There is a variety of means of funding postgraduate study: fellowships, studentships, scholarships, departmental teaching, bursaries etc The University of Warwick administered more than £21million of scholarships in 2011/12

Research Councils • The University bids to secure funding from research councils across all disciplines. • In 2011/12 the University was in receipt of £7.8million for scholarships from research councils. • The University hosts a number of Doctoral Training Centres in Science Faculty and the Economics and Social Research Council DTC. • The University is in receipt of funding from the following research councils: • Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) • Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) • Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) • Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) • Medical Research Council (MRC) • Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) • Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)

Warwick’s central competition (PGR) • Chancellor’s– approx. 50 offering fees at Home/EU rate and/or maintenance (£13,590 in 2012/13) • Chancellor’s International Scholarships – approx. 35 offering fees at full Overseas rate plus maintenance (Must be classed as ‘overseas’ for fee purposes) • AHRC doctoral awards – in specified departments • Wolfson Foundation (Language, Literature and History) • How to apply • Open now • Deadline: 11 January 2013 • Apply at admissions stage or via the Graduate School website

PGT Awards Combined Central Competition: AHRC Masters Awards (Specific departments) Santander awards (£5k- selected countries inc UK, China, USA and Russia) International Office Masters Li Xiaoming No Application Form. Deadline for nominations by departments 4th March 2013 Open Society Foundation scholarships Commonwealth Shared scholarships Departmental scholarships

  8. Know what you’re applying for What are my chances? How and when do I apply? Are there restrictions of nationality, subject area, mode of study etc? How would this funding fit in with my overall plans? What are the Terms and Conditions?

  10. If you don’t get all/ some/ any funding… Don’t panic! Apply for Chancellor’s/ CIS during your first year Look beyond the obvious funds (Charities, employers etc) Investigate departmental teaching opportunities Residential Life team Part time study
