Exploring the Resilient Temperate Forests: Climate, Flora, and Fauna

Temperate forests, located below 50 degrees in both hemispheres and primarily east of the Mississippi River in the U.S., experience cold winters and hot summers. These forests are characterized by four distinct seasons and receive 75 to 150 cm of evenly distributed precipitation annually. The flora includes deciduous trees like oak and beech, while fauna encompasses wolves, deer, bears, and migratory birds. Understanding this unique biome reveals the complex interactions between climate, vegetation, and wildlife in the temperate regions.

  1. The Tough Temperate Forest By: Brian Lai and Miguel Campos

  2. Location • The temperate forests are located below 50 degrees in both hemispheres. • They exist in mountianous areas. • In the United States, they are primarily found east of the Mississippi River.

  3. Climate • The temperate forests have cold winters and hot summers. • The climate is more moderate than the tundra and taiga biomes. • Temperature varies from -30 to 30 degrees C

  4. Temperate forests have four distinct seasons. They are spring, summer, fall, and winter. There are large changes in weather throughout the year. Seasons

  5. Precipitation • The temperate forests have moderate precipitation. • It has 75 to 150 cm of precipitation each year. • Precipitation is distributed evenly throughout the year.

  6. Plants • Plants in a temperate forest include: oak, hickory, and beech. • They lose there leaves every fall. • White fir trees produce a sweet acid.

  7. Animals • Animals in a temperate forest include: wolves, deer, bears, small mammals, and birds. • Bears and small mammals hibernate during the winter. • Birds migrate south during the winter.

  8. What Did You Learn? • How many centimeters of precipitation does a temperate forest receive each year? • What do bears do during the winter? • How much sunlight does a temperate forest receive in the summer? • What kind animals live in a temperate forest? • How cold does it get in winter?
