  4. Architecture • Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) • Introduced with Oracle 8 • Increased functionality over Oracle 7 • Oracle Enterprise Backup Utility (EBU) • Introduced with Oracle 7.2.3 • Oracle 7 slated for obso soon • VERITAS will support as long as Oracle does • Oracle ‘approved’ API for backup/recovery • VERITAS is fully certified • VERITAS is fully integrated with APIs • VERITAS is only s/w vendor that exploits ‘advanced’ RMAN features such as Proxy Copy

  5. NetBackup for Oracle 3.2 Feature Summary • Supported Platforms • Oracle • Oracle 7.2.3 and above • Oracle 8.x, Oracle 8i and above • Operating Systems • Windows NT Data General • Solaris NCR MP-RAS • HP-UX SGI IRIX • AIX Compaq Tru64 UNIX • DYNIX/ptx

  6. NetBackup for Oracle 3.2 Feature Summary • Key Features • Hot (online) or Cold (offline) backup • Parallel backup and restore up to 32 streams • Exploit high-speed tape devices • Full and incremental backup • Backup at the tablespace, datafile or database level • Backup all critical Oracle files--control files, recovery catalog, etc. • Archived redo log scheduled backup • Integrated with Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM)

  7. NetBackup for Oracle 3.2 Feature Summary • Key Features • Recovery Simulation • Simplified Recovery • Local or remote operations • Null block compression • Checksum validation • Data encryption • Auto discovery for on-line backup • Support Oracle OPS

  8. NetBackup for Oracle • NetBackup for Oracle • Used internally by Oracle’s IT organization“Due to the size of our IT environment, we needed a true enterprise solution that could provide reliable backup and recovery operations, and we found that with VERITAS NetBackup. Implementing VERITAS' end-to-end storage management product suite helps IT ensure Oracle's business critical data is protected and available," Gary Roberts, vice president of IT Americas for Oracle

  9. NetBackup for Oracle 3.2 • NetBackup for Oracle is the industry’s choice for Oracle backup and recovery.

  10. NetBackup for Oracle 3.2 Feature Summary • Centralized Administration • Windows NT GUI, Java GUI, Oracle Enterprise Manager or Command Line

  11. NetBackup for Oracle 3.2 Best Practice Recommendations • Use a recovery catalog • Maintain on separate server • Synchronize the recovery catalog daily • Use RMAN command structure for cold database backups • Backup archived redo logs • Retain a reasonable timeframe of archived redo logs on disk • Perform backups when you make structural changes to the database • Use RMAN exclusively in all operations with redo logs--don’t back them up yourself

  12. NetBackup 3.3 BusinesServer • Sun/NT/HP • Lower price • Workgroup focus • Support for Oracle • NetBackup 3.4 • Solaris 8 Support • W2K Support • HP-UX 11.11 • BLIB integration • RMAN GUI Roadmap Q100 Q200 Q400 • NetBackup 4.0 • BLIB • RMAN GUI • Phase II VERITAS is a key member of Oracle’s Backup Solution Program (BSP) and will always support the most current releases of Oracle

  13. NetBackup for OracleRoadmap • VERITAS NetBackup 3.3 BusinesServer • New UNIX Workgroup Server version • Fully supports Oracle database backups with NetBackup for Oracle • Perfect for UNIX workgroup Oracle installations of UNIX and/or NT • Focus on ease-of-use with wizards and GUI • Seamless upgrade to NetBackup DataCenter • Competitive price aimed at UNIX workgroup market • Supports fewer drives, slots and streams

  14. Where does BusinesServer Fit? Large Server (UNIX/NT) Mid-size Server (UNIX/NT/NetWare) Desktop to Small Server(Mostly NT/NetWare) NetBackupDataCenter NetBackupBusinesServer Backup ExecSingle Server Backup Exec Advanced Server Backup ExecSBS Telebackup

  15. NetBackup for OracleRoadmap • VERITAS NetBackup 3.4 • NetBackup DataCenter • NetBackup BusinesServer • Both will support Oracle module • Full RMAN functionality reqs Oracle Enterprise • The “HP” Release • Full parity between Solaris and HP platforms • BLI-Backup integration with VxFS for HP • Phase I GUI for Oracle Recovery Manager • Exploit RMAN’s Proxy Copy • Solaris 8 Support • BLI-Backup integration, RMAN GUI, Proxy Copy

  16. Block Level Incremental Backup NetBackup Server Only Changed BlocksSince LastBackup VERITAS File System with Storage Checkpoints NetBackup BLI Extension BlockLevelIncrementals PreviousFull Backup BlockLevelIncremental Backup PreviousFull Backup BlockLevelIncrementals + = FullRestore FullRestore

  17. Block Level Incremental Backup • Initially supported outside of Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) API • Requires VERITAS Database Edition for Oracle 2.x • VxFS is “BLIB” enabled, not available on ala carte file system • Includes VERITAS Quick I/O DB accelerator • BLI Backup will be integrated with RMAN post 3.2 via the Proxy Copy feature of RMAN (Q499) • New pricing and packaging scheme for Advanced version of agent

  18. Block Level Incremental Backup • Continued… • Two versions of NetBackup for Oracle • NetBackup for Oracle 3.2, standard RMAN • NetBackup for Oracle 3.2 Advanced BLI-Ext • NBU for Oracle Advanced is a superset, customers chose one or the other • Both RMAN (Oracle 8i Proxy Copy) BLIB and Oracle 7.x, 8.0.x (outside RMAN) BLIB will be supported via the Advanced Extension • EXCLUSIVE FEATURE OF VERITAS NETBACKUP AND VERITAS FILE SYSTEM • Both HP-UX and Solaris support

  19. NetBackup for Oracle • Oracle 8i Recovery Manager (RMAN) GUI • this information will be updated in early November and a hardcopy slide provided during the presentation. • Phase I of the RMAN GUI released with NetBackup 3.4 • Phase II of the RMAN GUI released with NetBackup 4.0

  20. Conclusions • Why chose Oracle RMAN & NetBackup for Oracle? • Native Oracle utilities (such as export) and Operating System utilities are: • Manual and error prone, no automation • scripts must be modified each time changes are made to database • Not database-aware • DBA must manually track control files, redo logs, etc • Difficult to achieve point-in-time recovery • Rolling forward too far with redo logs is easy to do

  21. Conclusions • Why chose Oracle RMAN and NetBackup for Oracle? (vs. native utilities or OS cmds) • No Media Manager or support for high end tape libraries or Storage Area Networks • VERITAS offers the most comprehensive MM and SAN support in the industry • No comprehensive disaster recovery or vault management • No data compression • No recovery simulation • No parallel backup or restore • No built-in scheduling
