What is Youth Apprenticeship? • State of Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development • Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce—Partners in Education • Two-Year Commitment • Career Preparation While in High School
What are the components ofYouth Apprenticeship? • High school academic/required classes • Occupation-related instruction • When placed, on-the-job training • Worksite placement is not guaranteed; high school grades, occupational classes, economy are factors—placements are competitive • Study time and family/friends time
What will you receive? • Upon high school graduation: • High school diploma • Investment for your future • Post-secondary education credits – students earn dual credit; up to ½ credit per semester on the high school transcript and credit on their NWTC transcript. • State Certificate of Occupational Proficiency • If worksite secured, work experience – paid on the job training which students also earn a grade and credit on their high school transcript • Skills, knowledge, money, and more • Respect
Selection/Placement Process • Applications are reviewed for completion • Screening interviews conducted by industry representatives – Mid April • Program acceptance based on application and screening scores – Notification Mid May • Enrolled in occupational-related class – CNA classes start in summer, all other classes start in August. • Compete for training site placement – job placements are competitive and not guaranteed.
Frequently Asked Questions • What is the cost to participate in this program? Industry classes and books are covered by the program, incidental costs and tools of the trade are at the expense of the student/parent. • If I enroll in youth apprenticeship, can I still participate in school/community extra-curricular activities? The program can generally work around one activity during the school year, class attendance at NWTC is mandatory, however accommodations can be made to leave early or arrive late for the class.
Frequently Asked Questions (cont.) • Who provides transportation? The program does not pay for transportation cost. • May I have a part-time job? Yes, however once placed in a Youth Apprenticeship the Youth Apprenticeship job is your first priority as this is considered part of school. If you keep a part time job in addition to your Youth Apprenticeship training, special caution must be taken to not exceed any Child Labor Law – hour limitations • Your questions.
