LORD RAMA’S BRIDGE. BY: VIDYA VENKAT. A Clear Closer View. Where is it located?. The bridge between India and Sri Lanka is called Ramar Palam in Tamil, Ram Sethu in Sanskrit meaning Rama’s bridge. It is also called Adam’s Bridge. The bridge is 18 miles (30km) long!

  3. Where is it located? • The bridge between India and Sri Lanka is called RamarPalam in Tamil, Ram Sethu in Sanskrit meaning Rama’s bridge. It is also called Adam’s Bridge. • The bridge is 18 miles (30km) long! • It connects Dhanuskodi tip of Rameswaram Island of India and Mannar Island of Sri Lanka

Who constructed it? • Lord Rama constructed it with support of Lord Hanuman to rescue Sitadevi. • According to Ramayana yuddhakanda (chapter 22): When Rama was about to release a missile (presided by Brahma) from his bow, the sea-god appeared with joined palms and advised to get a bridge constructed by Nala across the ocean. The ocean god then disappeared. Nala accordingly constructed a bridge across the sea with the help of other monkeys. • According to PadmaPurana, Lord Rama broke the bridge after rescuing Sita. • Not only Ramayana, but Mahabharata, SkandaPurana, SthalaPurana are all having information about Ram Sethu.

  5. What is going on now? • Indian government wants to destroy as part of Setusamudram Shipping Canal Project • It says no evidence that Rama built it.

  7. Why should we keep this bridge? • First man made bridge –1.7 million years old monument • Hanuman wrote ‘RAM’ in each stone. • To preserve wild life • To have thorium deposit • Sethu is real - that is the reason we keep names for our children as Sethu Raman, SethuMadhav, Sethu …..
