  1. Reframing the Conversation An Example of how Pennsylvania campus Compact has adapted a new AmeriCorps*VISTA Model

  2. Overview of Presentation • Why the conversation needs to be reframed • How to align Campus Compact & VISTA goals • How to refocus project outcomes and performance measures • How to speak a new language • How else can we adapt?

  3. Why the conversation needs to be reframed • National & State VISTA Offices pushing sponsoring organizations to narrow focus • Increased accountability and focus on community outcomes • Change in Strategic Priority Areas from the White House (Engaging Students in Service no longer a priority) • College student outcomes seen as irrelevant to mission of AmeriCorps*VISTA

  4. How to align Campus Compact and VISTA goals Old PACC*VISTA Goals New PACC*VISTA Goals • To develop and/or enhance campus-based efforts to address one of the identified AmeriCorps*VISTA service focus areas; • To integrate campus-community engagement and service efforts (including service-learning, community service, and work-study) so that local communities have better access to service resources and to meet the needs of low income communities more effectively and efficiently; • To support PACC with its mission to develop and/or enhance service programs and campus-community partnerships throughout Pennsylvania’s higher education network. • To develop or enhance campus-community efforts to address one of the identified project focus areas; • To create, develop, or sustain reciprocal, mutually beneficial partnerships between the campus and community organizations, leaders, and members; • To foster PACC*VISTA members as professionals and emerging leaders in the fields of community development, civic engagement, and/or higher education.

  5. How to refocus project outcomes and performance measures • All projects must focus in one of four specific project areas (tutoring, college access, food access, energy efficiency) • Each area has three prescribed results that all projects must fulfill • Both Logic Model and Performance Measures Form has pre-filled information • All Intermediate and End Outcomes focus on changes in lives of project beneficiaries

  6. How to speak a new language • Campus-community versus campus-based • Use community partner name on all official documents • Community outcomes are primary, college student outcomes are secondary

  7. How else can we adapt? • What else can we do to adapt? • How do we need to support our members through these processes? • How do we showcase our changes to CNCS?
