  1. Welcome to 6th Grade Ms. DaRugna Room 24 This will be my 28th year as a teacher. I have been fortunate to work at a school with such a wonderful community. I look forward to each new year, and the new set of learners it brings to our class. We will have our ups and downs, but each day is always be a new start.

  2. Schedule • 8:30 Homeroom • 8:45-10:15: Math • 10:15-10:50: ELA • 10:50-11:20: Specials Block • 11:20-12:50: ELA • 12:50-1:30: Lunch • 1:30-2:00 : WIN • 2:00-3:00: Science\Social Studies • 3:05: Dismissal • There will be a healthy snack built into the morning schedule. Snack needs to be easily accessible.

  4. Attendance is crucial for success. It also sends the message that school is important. Please send your child to school daily! Schedule vacations during breaks. Schedule appointments for after school hours. If it must be during school hours, the afternoon is a better choice. If your child has a fever or is vomiting, then keep them home. If your child is absent, please make arrangements to pick up their work. If your child is absent, they are RESPONSIBLE for missing assignments. They may need to come in at lunch or after school to make up any tests/quizzes/assignments missed. It is the child’s responsibility to ask for the work. R/R will still be due. Fridays are the worst day to miss due to testing. Attendance

  6. Homework Policy • STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO: • Keep notes organized and up-to-date. • Write assignments in agenda.. It will also be on the class website. • Read every night for at least 20 minutes. • You will be required to read different types of genres throughout the school year, i.e.. Fiction, nonfiction, biography, poetry, etc. • Complete homework neatly and in a timely manner. Always put first and last name, date, assignment.   7. Homework Policy Continue • STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO: • Write in complete sentences, explain why, and show work! I can’t help you if you don’t show me the work you completed. • Homework may or may not be graded, depending on the assignment. Student receive a score for what they have completed. For example, 10 HW assignments for the week, child completes all 10, they will receive a 100% score in gradebook. Only 5 assignments completed, 50% in gradebook. • Students will have a book project each quarter with a rubric. Some class time will be given, but a majority of it is at home. It is crucial not to wait until right before it is due to start working on it.

  8. ATI • Online test preparation to help guide our instruction.   10. Skills That Ensure Success: • Be Prepared for class. • Be a good listener. • Ask questions relevant to the lesson. • Participate in class discussions. • Take teacher-directed notes. Be neat! • Hand in legible homework on time. • Put your name, date, and assignment on everything!

Book Projects • Each quarter, your child will be required to complete a book project on an on-level chapter book they just completed. • Directions and a grading rubric will be given out and discussed in class. Will need a parent signature. • Some time may be given in class, but student will need to work on it at home. • Will usually be scored in reading and writing. • Start your chapter book now so you will be ready for the first project. • Student will present to class. • Don’t wait until a couple of days before due date to start your project!

Assessments and Grades • STUDENTS who are absent are RESPONSIBLE to ask for their make up tests/work. • Infinite Campus is the online grading system used by the district. • The Parent Portal is the way for you to view and keep updated with your child’s progress. PLEASE check it regularly so there are no surprises at progress report and report card time. • If you have any questions regarding a grade, please talk to your child first. Then you can email me for clarification.

  17. Assessments and Grades Continue • Students can retake some tests that are below 70%. Students will receive an average. Most cases it is the responsibility of the child to ask for the retake. • Must always show work if making corrections. • Some students may lose points from a test for not having the following: • Heading, complete sentences, explaining/justify, labels, work, etc. • There will be a few tests that students are not able to retake. They will be informed prior to test.

  18. Science CampPrescott Pines.org • Dates: May 13, 14, 15 • Chaperones needed: Fingerprint Clearance Card. Fingerprinting at Weinberg in August - dates coming soon. • Cost for students last year: $150. (tax credit) • Cost for chaperones: $125 (no tax credit) • LOTS more info coming. We will notify you of meetings, etc…

  19. Guess who’s coming to Weinberg! • We have been approved to partner with D.I.G.S. (Dogs in Grade Schools) We are thrilled to pilot this program for CUSD and are hoping it will bring many positive rewards to our students. • We will be tracking data to measure the programs change to discipline instances, attendance, and climate. • Dogs will visit lunch recess to start so students can meet them. After that, they can be used in counseling groups, assemblies, recess, help with testing anxiety, and students can even read aloud to them! • Facts that might answer some questions you may have: • The dogs go through extensive training and vetting to ensure they are the perfect fit for the job. • The dogs will be here 2 hours each day and will always be with their certified handler. • Dogs are groomed within 24 hours prior to visit to avoid allergies associated with dust or dander. • Arrangements will be made to accommodate students who are allergic or frightened of dogs. • Each dog is insured for $2 million against injury or damage.
