  1. Welcome to 5th Grade Curriculum Chat Mrs. Thompson’s Class Please sign in.

  2. Communication • Preferred communication is through email- please allow 48 hrs for response • Please check website for updates • Tuesday Folder (School News & graded papers) Keep all graded papers at home. • Check your child’s planner frequently. Incomplete or missing homework will be noted in the planner. • HAC-check for student progress~all grades/assessments posted within one week

  3. Homework • Approximately 50 minutes per night-does not include Independent Reading time. • Assigned as needed • Serves two purposes: 1. Practice skills/strategies learned in class 2. Reinforces responsibility • Homework is always posted in the classroom and child should write homework into their planner exactly how it is written. • Late or Incomplete – noted in planner • Homework brought to school by a parent will not be accepted. This helps students to learn responsibility! • Homework is subject to change

  4. Grading Policy • Formative Assessments-tool to guide our instruction (Discovery Education, classwork, pre-test, writing prompts, etc.) • Summative Assessments-80% • Quizes-20% • Retake (below 70%)

  5. Math Envision textbooks are available online • User names and passwords will be assigned Homework • Matches and reinforces skill learned Fluency Tests • Weekly 50 problems in 4 minutes IMPORTANT!! Your child must have multiplication and division facts (0-12) memorized! The complexity of math problems in 5th grade requires that they know these facts with fluency so they do not get “bogged down” with simple facts. This will allow them to focus on the bigger, more complex problem.

  6. Science • National Geographic Text can access online • Science Lab • Process Skill Practice • Cooperative learning based • Vocabulary counts as quiz • Unit/Theme count as summative test • Science Fair – May

  7. Language Arts We will be implementing reading and writing strategies throughout all subjects • Reading Goals- 5 books each quarter (MUST BRING BOOK TO SCHOOL EVERYDAY) • Students should be reading at home everyday • Reading responses due every Thursday • Reading workshop

  8. Social Studies • Text book -Pearson-My World-Building our Country (also available on line) • Curriculum focuses on American History Social Studies is integrated into the Reading Curriculum and classroom discussion

  9. FOCUS Teaching application of Close Reading Strategies on nonfiction text.

  10. Data Notebooks • A notebook students use to track their progress and learning goals. • Why Data Notebooks? • They empower students to be accountable for their learning. • Students can use data to set goals and track their progress towards achievement. • They provide opportunities for students to reflect on their learning.

  11. Makeup Work and Late Assignments • When a child is absent, they are expected to makeup the assignments missed. • I am not able to give out work in advance

  12. Miscellaneous Information • Attendance – hand written note (no emails) • Parent Conferences- please contact us if need arises • Parent Volunteers/Nametags • Student Supplies need to be replenished throughout the year to ensure success
