  1. Group 5Purpose of the European UnionSource & Literature: * EVROPSKA UNIJA – Zgodovina, ustanove, politike in evropski model družbe (Ješovnik, 2000)* www.euobserver.com* www.europa.eu.int 1.) Peace

  2. Peace, seen from the eyes of a poet – Victor Hugo • Victor Hugo stated that “United States of Europe” could exist, however peace & humanistic ideals should be the foundations,… These “dreams” were shattered by the upcoming Word Wars, which left Europe demolished in thought & in spirit.

  3. The bold alliance – end of conflicts & hatred • However, from the depths of ruins of World War 2, a New Hope lifted high into the hearts of European People, as they decided to end the chain of hatred & destruction. • Between 1945 & 1950 Konrad Adenauer, Winston Churchill, Alcide de Gasperi & Robert Schuman decided to convince the people to take a step in the reflective path of a right direction.

  4. The bold alliance – end of conflicts & hatred • In the Western Europe a New Order was supposed to be based on common interests of the already versatile individuals & different nations, bonded together by treaties, which would enable the ruling of law & equality of countries.

  5. Establishment of European Coal & Steel Community & signing the Maastricht treaty • On 9th May 1950 Robert Schuman, despite the fact that coal & steel were then used as an essential elements of war, gave in initiative to establish the “European Coal & Steel Community”. • Coal & steel, then used as acts of war, now they would be used as conditions 4 peace & reconciliation. The manufacture of the before mentioned compounds was now in control of the so called “High Authority”. • After nearly 50 fruitful years, the Maastricht treaty was signed in 1992, exercised in practise in 1993, thus giving the Institutions of Europe more power & jurisdictions– this was the birth of the EU as we all know now. • The EU helped 2 reunite Germany after the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. When the Soviet Empire collapsed in 1991, the countries of middle & Eastern Europe decided to join the European democratic nations, before being under the Warsaw pact.

  6. Security and protection in EU social security personal data protection - protection against international crime

  7. Common foreign and security policy (CFSP) • The idea that the European Union should speak with one voice in world affairs • But the Union has made less progress in forging a common foreign and security policy over the years than in creating a single market and a single currency

  8. Common foreign and security policy (CFSP) • The need to fight international terrorism have convinced EU leaders that they should create formal instruments of both diplomacy and intervention. • One of the problems was to agree how much authority for vital issues of foreign policy and security should be vested(right power given) in the EU and its institutions and how much should be retained by member states

  9. Common foreign and security policy (CFSP) • European Commission and, to a lesser extent(importance), the European Parliament, are associated with the process. However, the formula agreed still requires that key decisions be taken by unanimous vote – hard to achieve when there were 15 EU members, even more difficult with 25

  10. Group 5Purpose of the European Union 3.) Economical & Social Solidarity

  11. Unitary Market • Even though the European Union was formed with an agenda to reach specific political goals, the secret of her success lies in her economical foundations – unitary market, where unitary currency ( €; euro) is being used by 12 member states of the EU. • Despite the decreasing percentage of the European population, the EU is trying to compete with other economically rising countries of the far East with its unitary approach. • In addition, the EU has decided to put a lot of effort in opening the unitary market, so that every country in the EU pact could better provide for its consumers & companies.

  12. Open competition • Furthermore, when the EU decided to remove customs & other bureaucracy obstacles, the whole market could start to compete in and out of the borders of the European Union. • Although balance is a ratio between open competition & solidarity, the true applicable uses of this lay in the help for the ordinary population. • The European Union must provide help for specific fractions of the population, for instance farmers & such, when natural disasters occur (floods, etc. ), by ensuring financial aid from the EU budget when possible.

  13. Benefits & Development • In conclusion, the Commission with its Structural Activities supports & encourages the endeavours of many regional project-based ideas, lead by its creators. • Funds, which are being gathered & collected through different types of taxation, are then dispersed to different types of projects, for 1, the enhancement of the traffic infrastructure. • Lastly, better railroad connections and expanding the highway should provide better accessibility to far, remote regions and ensure better non-European trade and or market.
