  5. And it’s about the sacrifice of a young Orange County man and the efforts of his parents to do something positive as a result. Trevor Anthony Win'E Born September 24th, 1981 Killed in Action May 21st, 2004

  6. Trevor Win’E, Rick and Debi and the rest of the Win’E Family

  7. Following Trevor’s death, his parents, Rick and Debi Win’E decided to establish a memorial fund to honor Trevor and do something to help servicemen still deployed in Iraq. Having privately purchased a cooling vest for Trevor to use on his deployment, they began to take donations in his memory and purchase cooling vests for the troops still there.

  8. As word spread in the community, others decided to help. A fund raising effort in the Orange County Fire Authority and CrossFit Affiliates has to date raised $100,000 for vests which have been sent to various units including the 184th California Army National Guard which included troops from Orange County, Northern California and Hawaii. A similar fund raising effort spread to the Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) and LA City FD who to date have raised $150,000 and sent vests numerous heroes in the middle east.

  11. The manufacturer the Win’E family purchased Trevor’s vest from is Mist n Go. The Trevor Win’E Memorial Fund purchases all vests exclusively through this manufacturer.

My soldiers conduct patrols daily in and around the city, sometimes out of the comfort and shade for 8 continuous hours, and they all are thankful for your gift. I have never seen a soldier so willing to share his equipment with another soldier before the vests were made available to them. We have a few spartan offices that we conduct business out of and on the door to operations rooms hangs a note from your foundation that accompanied the vests. A silent tribute to Trevor and you all for the sacrifices you have made and your generous gifts you have given us. My soldiers call the cooling vest "Trevor’s vest" for short, in a tone of respect and gratitude you would not expect from these hardened warriors. A tribute that only soldiers could understand.   18. Why Doesn’t the Military Buy These? • The manufacturer tells us that the military is aware of the product. He indicates that although they are generally positive about the product, with all the competing equipment development requirements facing them, he does not believe this will be addressed soon.

  19. Are They Approved to Wear? • Yes, the military does allow items of personal comfort that are individually purchased to be worn in combat. The military is aware of the vest, and the "Iraq Pack" is now Mist'n Go's No. 1-selling item. The manufacturer estimates that more than 8,000 have been shipped to Iraq. Trevor's fund accounts for about 10 percent of that total. We have had occasions when a unit commander is reluctant to allow the vests to be worn on patrol (it is a commanders prerogative), but this is a relatively rare occurrence.

How Do They Work? • The cooling occurs through a combination of evaporative cooling by wetting the vest prior to use, and the vest also contains lightweight, reusable chemical packs manufactured to freeze solid without benefit of refrigeration. "You can put it in water, in an air conditioning duct, and in 20 minutes they're solid again," said the manufacturer, who tested the cooling efficiency of his product on a fully-armored volunteer doing push-ups, squats, and knee-bends - in a sauna. In some circumstances, troops tell us they wear the vests and use the evaporative cooling on patrol and insert the cooling packs to aid in sleeping. Others use both on patrol, it varies by individual preference.

  21. How Much of My Donation Buys Vests? • 100% of the funds donated are used to buy vests. All fundraising efforts are completely donated and are a labor of love and respect.

  22. How Much is Each Vest? • The manufacturer has discounted each vest purchased through the memorial fund which is normally about $225 to $135 ($157 with detachable sleeves which we recommend) for military orders. Additionally, he provides a free vest for every 10 purchased.
