RPC FE Electronics longevity issue. On-detector electronics: FE boards (~4700 Barrel; ~1300 Endcap ) Distribution board (~360 Barrel; ~ 430 Endcap ). Present status (LS1) Can we estimate the FE behavior after LS2 and during Phase2? . Status at LS1.

RPC FE Electronicslongevityissue • On-detector electronics: • FE boards (~4700 Barrel; ~1300 Endcap) • Distribution board (~360 Barrel; ~ 430 Endcap) • Present status (LS1) • Can we estimate the FE behavior after LS2 and during Phase2? RPC Upgrade meeting n. 5 Flavio Loddo, INFN-Bari
Status at LS1 • FE boards: worked smoothly, with few failures or malfunctioning: • 11 barrel+ 4 endcap • Distribution board: showed some fragilities (each board can control up to 3 rolls): • Barrel: 42 Rolls with TH problems (only on 16 rolls we can not control the TH). • Endcap: 12 chambers Tot. Number of activechannel 97.4% RPC Upgrade meeting n. 5 Flavio Loddo, INFN-Bari
Status at LS1 • New Barrel Distribution board with improved protection was developed and produced (50 boards) • They will be used to replace the broken boards during LS1 (where possible) in the barrel chambers • Endcap chambers will be repaired with old DB. RPC Upgrade meeting n. 5 Flavio Loddo, INFN-Bari
Whatabout Phase2 ? • Since the replacement of all “old” distribution board is not realistic we should expect new failures after LS1 • It’s hard to evaluate the longevity of FEBs, since at the moment their death rate is quite low • An important issue to be considered is the radiation tolerance: • FEBs have been tested up to a neutron fluence of 10^12 neutrons/cm^2, corresponding to more than 10 LHC years in the region |eta| < 1.6 • Most of the front-end electronics is analog, so SEUs would just increase the spurious noise rate by a negligible quantity RPC Upgrade meeting n. 5 Flavio Loddo, INFN-Bari
Whatabout Phase2 ? From D. Piccolo’s answer to Jeff’s questions: using as reference a neutron flux between 2 and 3*10^3 neutrons/(cm^2 s) in the region around eta=1.6 at L=10^34 (muon TDR figure 10.6.3) it is possible to extract that a fluence of 10^12 neutrons/cm^2 corresponds to about 3000-5000 fb-1 In order to qualify the on-detector electronics for higher doses and fluence, a new campaign of irradiation test with neutrons/protons must be considered/planned RPC Upgrade meeting n. 5 Flavio Loddo, INFN-Bari
