  3. What Changes in Ninth Grade? Credits • Students will earn credits for classes that they pass. -In general, students earn .5 credit per semester (one credit for a full-year course). • Students must make up every required course that they fail. • Promotion is based solely on number of credits earned (students need 5.5 to be promoted to tenth grade) THE GOOD NEWS: NONE OF THIS WILL EVER MATTER AS LONG AS THE STUDENT PASSES ALL OF THEIR CLASSES!!!

What Changes in Ninth Grade?GPA • Beginning in ninth grade, GPA is cumulative. • Cumulative GPA is based on semester averages only. • Semester averages are calculated using quarter grades (40% each) and the semester exam (20%). • All calculations are based on percentages, not letter-grade values. DID YOU KNOW? ONLY SEMESTER AVERAGES APPEAR ON TRANSCRIPTS

  6. Planning for the Future End-of-Course Exams Beginning in 2014-2015, students will no longer be required to pass the OGT to graduate. Students will be required to pass End-of-Course Exams as set forth by the State of Ohio. English English 1 (9) English 2 (10) English 3 (11) Social Studies American history (10) American government (12) Math Algebra I (9) Geometry (10) Algebra II (12) Science Physical Science (9) Biology (10)

Planning for the FutureAcademic Recognition Award of Merit • Above-average attendance in grades 9-12 • Demonstrate outstanding achievement: Overall 3.25 GPA or 3.5 in grades 11 and 12 or rank in top 25% • Participate in co-curricular, extracurricular or community activities: 20 hrs each in 9th and 10th grades and 30 hrs each in 11th and 12th grades or 50 hrs each in 11th and 12th grades. • No Suspensions (in or out or school)

Planning for the FutureAcademic Recognition Award of Merit (College Prep) Award of Merit (Career/Tech) • English-4 credits • Math-3 credits (must include 1 algebra and 1 geometry) • Science-3 credits (must include 2/3-biology, chemistry, physics) • Social Studies-3 credits (must include 2 history and ½ government) • Foreign Language-3 credits (must include 3 of same lang. or 2 of each lang.) • Complete 2 additional credits from: subjects above, business, computer science, and/or visual or performing arts. • English-4 credits • Math-3 credits • Science-2 credits • Social Studies-3 credits • Complete 2 additional credits from: subjects above, business, computer science, foreign language, and/or visual or performing arts • Complete vocational occupational preparation program (e.g. ACC)

Planning for the FutureAcademic Recognition Honors Diploma (Must meet 7 of the 8) Career/Tech Honors Diploma (Must meet 7 of the 8) • English-4 credits • Math-4 credits (Algebra I and II, Geometry, and another higher level course • Science-4 creds (Physics and Chem) • Social Studies-4 credits • Foreign Language-3 creds of 1 lang. or 2 creds in each of 2 langs • Fine Arts-1 credit • Overall GPA-3.5 on 4.0 scale • Test Scores-27 on ACT or 1210 on SAT (excluding writing score) • English-4 credits • Math-4 credits (Algebra I and II, Geometry, and another higher level course • Science-4 creds (Physics and Chem) • Social Studies-4 creds • 4 credits minimum of Career-Tech • Achieve the proficiency benchmark established for the appropriate Ohio Career-Technical Competency Assessment or the equivalent • Overall GPA-3.5 on 4.0 • Test Scores-27 on ACT or 1210 on SAT (excluding writing score)

Planning for the FutureAthletic Eligibility • Minimum 1.75 GPA during preceding grading period (this includes 4th nine weeks for fall sports) • Must earn passing grades in a minimum of five courses (PE doesn’t count) • Ineligible students may practice, per approval of parent and coach, but may not participate in competition or performances. • Summer school and other educational options may not be used to substitute for failing grades. • NCAA eligibility-www.ncaaclearinghouse.net MORE INFORMATION IN THE RIVERSIDE CAMPUS ACADEMIC INFORMATION BOOKLET (PINK OR ONLINE)

Planning for the FuturePost-Secondary Enrollment Options Program • The PSEO program allows eligible students to enroll in college, full or part-time, for non-sectarian courses for high school and college credit. • RHS students may want to consider PSEO for their junior and/or senior years. • Students must have and maintain a 3.0 GPA. • Students must provide their own transportation. • There are no tuition, lab or book fees. • If a student fails a course, s/he is responsible for repaying the costs of the course(s) to the BOE. • Courses resulting in a grade of “D” or below will not transfer to other colleges. PSEO IS AWESOME! HOWEVER, IT’S NOT FOR EVERYONE 

Registering for ClassesScheduling Procedures • Students were given scheduling information (available online the week of Feb. 11) and registration forms in English classes. • Parents and students decide which courses to take in ninth grade. • Parents and/or students speak with teachers regarding questions about appropriate placement. • Orange forms are completed correctly and signed by parent/guardian. • Forms are turned in to English teacher or Ms. Winer.

Registering for ClassesRequired courses In ninth grade, all students will take: • English-College Prep (CP) or Honors • Math-Algebra 1, Geometry or Geometry Honors • Science – Physical Science CP, Physical Science Honors or Biology 1 Honors • World History-CP or Honors • Physical Education-1 semester (.25 credit)

Registering for classesEnglish • English 1 CP: Students currently in English 8 should take this course. • English 1 Honors: This course is more rigorous than English 1 CP, including covering material at a much faster pace and requiring more projects and a large research paper. Students are expected to read one novel on their own per quarter and will have more reading and assignments to do over the summer. UNLESS A STUDENT HAS ALL “A”s IN ENGLISH 8, IT’S LIKELY THAT S/HE WILL HAVE DIFFICULTY EARNING “B”s and “C”s IN ENGLISH 1 HONORS.

  16. Registering for ClassesMath • Algebra 1 (Common Core): Students currently in Math 8 will take this course. THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE. • Geometry: Students currently in Algebra 1 CP should take this course • Geometry Honors: Students currently doing well in Algebra 8 Honors should take this course. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS REGARDING WHICH MATH COURSE YOUR STUDENT SHOULD TAKE, ASK THEIR FRIENDLY MATH TEACHER!!!

Registering for ClassesScience • Physical Science 9: Students currently in Science 8 should take this course. • Physical Science 9 Honors: In order to take this course, students should have the following grades, using semester 1 averages: Science: 90% (non-honors) or 70% (honors) Math: 80% (non-honors) or 70% (honors) English: 80% (non-honors) or 70% (honors) • Biology 1 Honors: In order to take this course, students should have the following grades, using semester 1 averages: Science: 95% (non-honors) or 80% (honors) Math: 80% (non-honors) or 70% (honors) English: 80% (non-honors) or 70% (honors)

Registering for ClassesSocial Studies • World History CP: Students currently in U.S. History 8 should take this course. • World History Honors: This course is more rigorous than World History CP, covering more in-depth information. Assessments are more difficult, often requiring more lengthy written responses. Students will be responsible for more projects and research assignments. UNLESS A STUDENT HAS ALL “A”s IN U.S. HISTORY 8, IT’S LIKELY THAT S/HE WILL HAVE DIFFICULTY EARNING “B”s and “C”s IN W. HISTORY HONORS.

Registering for ClassesElectives • Students are strongly encouraged to fulfill their Fine Arts (1 credit) and Technology (0.5 credit) requirements for graduation in ninth grade. • Foreign language is not required for graduation, however it is recommended that students considering a four-year college should take three years of a foreign language or two years of two foreign languages. • Students do not receive credit for Study Hall. • Freshmen are the first students to get dropped from courses if they’re overloaded, so it is recommended that students select at least five elective choices.

If you answered “yes” (or just “probably not”) to the questions above, please consider volunteering for our Career Day on Friday, March 15, from 7:30-9:30a.
