Objective Humorous Pessimistic Angry Informal Playful Cheerful Ironic Pompous Horror Light Sad Serious Formal Resigned Suspicious Gloomy Optimistic Witty MOOD: THIS CHANGES!! This describes the FEEL of the writing, the emotional atmosphere of a text Fanciful Melancholy Frightening Mysterious Frustrating Romantic Gloomy Sentimental Happy Sorrowful Joyful Suspenseful YOU WORK OUT TONE AND MOOD BY ANALYZING THE DICTION, IMAGERY, SETTING, DIALOGUE, PLOT ETC. How would you describe Achebe’s TONE at the end of the novel? What is the MOOD in chapter 25?

What is the function of dialogue, song and conversely silence in this novel? With whom do the reader’s sympathies lie in the end? What is the impact of the complex merging of Western literary form and ‘African English’, or Igbo expressions? What is your response to the ending? Bring in tone and mood.
