  4. A little about me. . . • Central High School Class of 2000. • Clarion University, bachelors degree. • Penn State University, masters degree. • Daughter, Christina. • Cat, Windsor. • 2 brothers Greg and Jake

Class Etiquette…a fancy word for rules • Come to Class Prepared! • No Food or Drinks • No Cell Phones • Bathroom rule….one at a time! • No sharing Ipods • Please participate….in discussions and group work and activities. • Library Mode: When we are having a “writing” day, the class goes “quiet” shhhhh!

  6. Class Participation Policy Respect is the Key!!! • First Warning……all is well!!! • Second Warning….Loose 5 points • Third Warning…..Loose all 10 points for the day. • I reserve the right to change your seating at any time. 10 points per class

  7. You Will Succeed!!!!! • If… • You Follow Directions! • Back-up all your documents – 3 Places • Triple save: Email, Student Folder, and Flash drive. • Hand your work in on time. • Follow Directions…..all directions – like even to put your name on your work – kind of directions.

  8. “It is easier to be critical than to be correct.” Let’s talk about this. . .

  9. Pair/Share and Make a list. . . • What kind of facts PROVE an opinion? • Statistics • Testimony – personal and professional stories • Data collected through studies and tests. • Events – current and historic.

  10. Narrow Questions – Remember it’s only a 5-7 page paper! • Broad • What are the effects of school uniforms? • Narrow • Do school uniforms truly decrease school violence? • Do school uniforms effect bullying in high schools?

  11. You try it this time. . . • Broad Topic • Cell phones • Narrow topic • In question form. • You have one minute to think of two narrowed topics. • Now pair/share. • Now class share.

  12. Pose a challenging question. . . Don’t be predictable! • Predictiable/Bland • Is child abuse wrong? • Is it important for teenagers to exercise? • Challenging/Controversial • Is spanking a child wrong? • How does exercise effect student’s academic performance?

  13. You try this time. . . • Predictiable/Bland • Is steroid use in sports bad? • Challenging/Controversial • In question form. . . • You have one minute to think of two challenging questions • Now pair/share. • Now class share.

  14. You choose the better issue. . . 1. Do SAT scores thoroughly predict college success? OR Should SAT tests be abolished? 2. Should teenagers be allowed to use social networks (like Facebook and MySpace)? OR How does Facebook effect a teen’s ability to communicate and socialize?

  15. You choose the better issue. . . 1. Should schools be required to serve healthy lunches? OR How do healthy school lunches affect student performance? 2. Does technology increase student understanding, learning, and scores? OR Should classrooms provide technology for students to use?

  16. Choosing your Topic You will want to “love” what you’re writing about!

  17. Now it’s your turn to explore. . . Explore 3 kinds of media Newspaper Magazine Internet Source Journals Television Radio Personal Contact Find 3 topics & 3 Pictures • Select 3 different issues • Write them on your handout. • Find 3 pictures that depict your topics. • Bring them to our NEXT class for a group assignment.

  19. What is your opinion? As you choose a topic, keep an open mind. You don’t have to know a lot about the topic or have an opinion about it. Your research will help you learn more about your topic and your discoveries will help you form and opinion.

  20. What are you interested in? Choose a topic that has a personal interest or connection. Do not choose a topic because its easy to find information about it. Be ready to “dig” for information about something that truly interests you.

  21. OFF LIMIT TOPICS! Abortion - This is too broad and emotional. Global Warming – This topic has been overdone! Legalizing Marijuana – Way over done!
