Historical Development of the Global Circuit Concept and Its Future Measurement Applications

This presentation by Dr. Karen Aplin explores the historical evolution of the global circuit concept, integrating lightning and fair weather electricity. It reviews how early electrostatic studies from the 16th to the 18th centuries laid the groundwork for understanding electricity's role in atmospheric phenomena. Key figures like Benjamin Franklin and d’Alibard are highlighted for their contributions. The talk aims to connect this historical context with modern-day implications and future measurements in the field, providing insights into the complex interactions of atmospheric electricity.

    2. 2 Introduction Lightning has been observed and feared since ancient times The (then) separate discipline of electrostatics began in the C16th and developed throughout C17th and 18th. Benjamin Franklin first suggested lightning was electricity; this was verified experimentally by dAlibard in 1752 Regular measurements of fair weather electricity also began about this time Despite this long history, fair and disturbed weather electricity were only linked through the global circuit model in the C20th Why is this, and what can be learnt from it?
