  1. Ash wednesday Religion Grades 7/8

  2. Mardi Gras/Carnival In many places, Brazil and in the United States, a huge festival is held in advance of Lent. This is one last big party before we begin fasting.

  3. Ash Wednesday This holy day marks the beginning of the Lenten season. During this season we look towards Jesus for strength as we focus on sacrifice.

  4. Why Ashes? We wear ashes on our foreheads to show the world that we accept ourselves to be sinners, but that we desire God’s love. We do this so that others know of our desire to become better people. In the end we will all be returned to ash.

  5. Forty Days While accepting his fate as God’s sacrifice to save humanity, Jesus wandered the dessert for forty days. During this time he was tempted by the devil to give up and submit to temptation.

  6. Sacrifice As we try to be with Jesus, during lent, we are asked to think and sacrifice for the days leading up to Easter.

  7. Sacrifice Continued We abstain from something that we enjoy because it shows that we have self control. It also shows that we are devoted to God and willing to give up worldly desires to gain his love.

  8. Fasting We do not eat meat on Ash Wednesday, or on Fridays during the Lenten season. This is a Catholic tradition that helps us maintain discipline.

  9. It’s Not Punishment This fasting and abstinence is not simply a form of penance, however; it is also a call for us to take stock of our spiritual lives. As Lent begins, we should set out specific spiritual goals we would like to reach before Easter and decide how we will pursue them

  10. Your assignment In an essay (3 paragraphs) explain what sacrifices you will be making for lent.

  11. Outline Introduction – Include what sacrifices you will be making for the Lenten Season. Body – Outline why you are giving up a certain habit and why you enjoy it so much.
