Heritage Quest Freedman’s Bank - 1 • Freedman’s Savings and Trust Company: • Incorporated in 1865 by an act signed by Abraham Lincoln • Purpose to create an institution where former slaves and • dependents could place and save their money. • Original bank opened in NYC and later moved to DC. • Eventually 37 branches in 17 states with 70,000 depositors & • $57,000,000. • Closed in 1874 due to mismanagement, fraud, & other events • Records from 29 of 37 branches survived. • Most lost 2/5th of deposits. Many never claimed. • Considerable personal information required to make a deposit • Information varied by year and branch Freedman's Bank Records is a great source for genealogists researching their African American heritage because of the amount of personal information recorded for each individual in it.

  50. MGS Computer Special Interest Group (SIG) WHAT IS IT?       A meeting of genealogists interested in using their personal computers to enhance their research. WHEN?                  Monthly -- On the first Tuesday of the month (October through May) following main topic speaker. TIME:                     About 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM, following the meeting break period after the main MGS speaker. PLACE:                  The Central Library Auditorium, Bradenton, FL (same location as our MGS monthly meeting) WHO:                     Open to all those interested in using their personal computers to enhance their genealogical research. PROGRAM:         Each month we will discuss and view what's new in genealogy on the Internet.  We'll have demonstrations of software and hardware that will facilitate our research.  Tips and techniques will be shared by and among those attending each meeting.  Genealogically related computer, Internet, digital photography and research questions will be fielded during the sessions.  We'll look at the newest technology but will keep the discussions as low tech as possible. • What topics would you like to hear??????
