School Playground Olympics & Paralympics Challenge

Get your pupils involved and excited about sports with simplified setup and rules for various Olympic & Paralympic sports. Choose a legacy sport for long-term engagement. Equipment and rules provided for basketball, handball, water polo, hockey, volleyball, tennis, archery, Boccia, goalball, and sitting volleyball.

Playground Olympics and Paralympics • Between now and the start of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the Summer we are challenging you to enable your pupils to try some sports that they may have never played before. • To help with this challenge, we are providing simplified set up and rules for 10 of the 46 Olympic and Paralympic sports which we feel any school will be able to do given the equipment available in your PE store. • If you have any other ideas, please let us know! Legacy Sport • Following on from this resource we would like you to chose one of the new sports you try as your school’s LEGACY SPORT. • This means that you will continue to play that sport in your school in future years as a continuation of the work done to embrace the excitement of the Olympic and Paralympic Games being held in London in 2012. • If enough schools take up this challenge then it will potentially enable us to add new sports festivals to our SSP competition calendar in the future giving schools the chance to develop these games and play fixtures in them against other schools.   5. Basketball(Indoor or Outdoor) Basic Set Up & Rules Up to 5-a-side dependant on space available. The aim is to throw the ball into the opponents’ goal/hoop. (2 points per Goal* – Games can be played up to a certain number or timed.) Players can dribble by bouncing the ball when moving and pass using any technique they wish. “Tackling” can only be done in the form of a pass interception. (T/E) *You could also add in an area at each end and if a goal is scored from outside that area 3 points are awarded. • Equipment Required • Cones/Markers to set out a playing area; • Basketball if available, if not, then any ball (approx. football size) that bounces; • Netball posts if basketball goals are not available (If you have neither, then you could even have a player standing at each end as a “target” for the ball to be thrown to – they could even be holding a small hula hoop for the ball to be thrown through! In this case, make sure you are using a SOFT ball!); • Bibs to distinguish teams.

  6. Handball(Indoor or Outdoor) Basic Set Up & Rules Up to 7-a-side dependant on space available. The aim is to throw the ball into the opponents’ goal. (1 point per Goal – Games can be played up to a certain number or timed.) Players can dribble and pass as in basketball. Have an area at each end in which players CANNOT score. (Shown by the shaded area.) “Tackling” can only be done in the form of a pass interception. (T/E) • Equipment Required • Cones/Markers to set out a playing area and goals; • Soft (football sized) ball that can be held in one hand if necessary and bounces; • Bibs to distinguish teams.

  7. Water Polo(Indoor) Basic Set Up & Rules Up to 7-a-side dependant on space available. The aim is to throw the ball into the opponents’ goal. (1 point per Goal – Games can be played up to a certain number or timed.) Players must SIT DOWN to simulate being in water and can only move when NOT holding the ball. This must be done using a “CRAB-FOOTBALL” style movement. (T/E) Each team only has 30 seconds to score when they have the ball. If they fail to do this, the ball is given to the other team. “Tackling” can only be done in the form of a pass interception. (T/E) • Equipment Required • NO WATER REQUIRED! • Cones/Markers to set out a playing area and goals; • Soft (football sized) ball that can be held in one hand and bounces; • Bibs to distinguish teams. • Stop Watch

  8. Hockey(Indoor or Outdoor) Basic Set Up & Rules Up to 11-a-side dependant on space available. The aim is to hit the ball into the opponents’ goal. (1 point per Goal) Players can dribble the ball when moving and pass using the stick and any technique they wish. The GOALKEEPER is the only player on each team who can touch the ball with their hands and feet. OR, have a small goal and NO goalkeeper • Equipment Required • Cones/Markers to set out a playing area and goals; • Small ball (E.g. Tennis ball); • Hockey sticks of any kind – 1 per player; • Bibs to distinguish teams.

  9. Volleyball(Indoor or Outdoor) Basic Set Up & Rules Up to 6-a-side dependant on space available. The object of the game is to get the ball to land on the opponents’ side of the “net”.* (1 point is won each time this is achieved – Games can be played up to a certain number or timed.) A point is lost by a team if they hit the ball OUTSIDE of the playing area that has been set out without it bouncing. The ball can only be hit using the hands. Allow each team to touch the ball as many times as they like before it is sent back over the net. (This can be adjusted dependant on success rates!) *If this proves difficult, allow the ball to bounce ONCE before it is hit. If it bounces MORE THAN ONCE, then a point is scored. • Equipment Required • Cones/Markers to set out a playing area; • Soft (football sized) ball that bounces; • Tennis net if available. (If not, simply use benches or cones to mark a centre line or “net”.)

  10. Tennis(Indoor or Outdoor) Basic Set Up & Rules Up to 4-a-side dependant on space available. The object of the game is to get the ball to bounce MORE THAN ONCE on the opponents’ side of the “net”.* (1 point is won each time this is achieved – Games can be played up to a certain number or timed.) A point is lost by a player/team if they hit the ball OUTSIDE of the playing area that has been set out without it bouncing. The ball can only be hit using the racket. Each player/team can only touch the ball ONCE IN TOTAL to send it back over the net. *If this proves difficult, allow the ball to bounce MORE THAN ONCE before it is hit. If it bounces MORE THAN the agreed number of times, then a point is scored. • Equipment Required • Cones/Markers to set out a playing area; • Tennis ball or similar sized soft ball that bounces; • Tennis net if available. (If not, simply use benches or cones to mark a centre line or “net”.) • Tennis rackets – 1 per player

  11. Archery(Indoor or Outdoor) Basic Set Up & Rules Set out the cones/markers so that you have a few different coloured circles inside each other. (The middle circle holding the highest number of points working outwards to the lowest number of points at the outside circle.) The object of the game is to throw the bean bags as close to the centre of the target area as possible. Alternatively, have coloured hula-hoops laid on the floor with each one holding a different number of points. NB - You could also change the number of points depending on how close or far away the players are standing when they throw their bean bags. 5 10 15 20 • Equipment Required • Cones/Markers or Hula Hoops to set out target area(s); • Bean bags or similar to be thrown towards the target(s).

  13. Boccia(Indoor or Outdoor) Basic Set Up & Rules Up to 6-a-side The object of the game is to throw or roll the balls to land as close to the “Jack” as possible. PLAYERS MUST BE SEATED WHEN IT IS THEIR TURN TO SEND THE BALL. (If this is not possible then they must stand stationary with both feet together on a flat rubber “spot”) Teams take alternate goes until all the balls have been played. At the end of each game (IE: after 6 balls each), the player, pair or team whose ball is closest to the Jack scores one point, and receives an additional point for every ball that sits closer to the Jack than the opposition’s closest ball.(T/E) J Equipment Required Cones/Markers to set out a playing area; Up to 13 balls of tennis ball size or similar (Alternatively, use bean bags); 6 x one colour* for one team 6 x a different colour for the opposing team 1 x a third colour to act as the “Jack” or Target (*Or suitably marked so that you know which ball belongs to which team); Something for the player taking their turn to sit on. (Or a flat rubber spot to stand on)

  14. Goalball(Indoor) Basic Set Up & Rules Up to 5-a-side dependant on space available. The aim is to roll the ball into the opponents’ goal. (1 point is won each time this is achieved – Games can be played up to a certain number or timed.) The person rolling the ball can stand up, everyone else must start in a kneeling position. The defensive team can then stop the ball using any technique they wish. Players stay in their own half of the court. NB – Goalball goals usually stretch the whole width of the pitch, but could be made smaller if you wish to make the game more difficult. • Equipment Required • Cones/Markers or Benches to set out a playing area and goals; • Soft (football sized) ball that can be held in one hand if necessary. • NB – Goalball is usually played by players with visual impairments and so requires blindfolds and a ball with a bell in it. For the purpose of this resource we are proposing a “sighted” version of the game. However, feel free to have a go with the blindfolds and “bell-ball” if you wish.

  15. Sitting Volleyball(Indoor) Basic Set Up & Rules Up to 6-a-side dependant on space available. ALL PLAYERS MUST BE SEATED ON THE FLOOR AT ALL TIMES! The object of the game is to get the ball to land on the opponents’ side of the “net”.* (1 point is won each time this is achieved – Games can be played up to a certain number or timed.) A point is lost by a team if they hit the ball OUTSIDE of the playing area that has been set out without it bouncing. The ball can only be hit using the hands. Allow each team to touch the ball as many times as they like before it is sent back over the net. (This can be adjusted dependant on success rates!) *If this proves difficult, allow the ball to bounce ONCE or even more before it is hit. If it bounces MORE THAN the allotted number of times, then a point is scored. • Equipment Required • Cones/Markers to set out a playing area; • Soft (football sized) ball that bounces; • Tennis net if available.
