  1. Compare & Contrast Compare & Contrast Analyzing text Goal for Lesson 9: You will use the skills to Compare & Contrast to analyze different passages.

  2. Compare & Contrast Analyzing Text Comparing & Contrasting: Similarities differences How do 2 or more texts on a similar topic compare? How are they similar? How are they different?

  3. Compare & Contrast What is similar? What is different? What do they have in common? Let’s practice with comparing these passages together: Matt.2:1-11 Luke 2:8-20 What is the Main idea in each passage? What are the supporting details? What do they both have in common? How are they different?

  4. Compare & Contrast Matt 2:1-11 Luke 2:8-20 Differences Similarities Differences Differences

  5. What is the main idea of both passages? They share a common theme: The announcement of the birth of Jesus. This is great news for ALL people! (This would be written in the overlap part of the Venn diagram.)

  6. Both Wise Men and shepherds learned about the birth of Jesus. They both saw signs from the Sky. The wise men saw a bright star and the shepherds saw and heard angels shouting from above declaring the news of the birth of Jesus. (This would also be written in the overlap part of the Venn diagram.)

  7. How do both passages differ? Why do you think they differ? The wise men or scholars as The Message Bible calls them, study the stars. The Shepherds are tending their sheep in the field at night. They do not know what is happening at first and they are frightened.

  8. They don’t understand what it means until the angels appear to them and shares the good news to them. The wise men study the stars and are scholars. The shepherds take care of sheep and are not scholars. One group uses their head and the other their hands as a living.

  9. Why do you think they differ? I believe the 2 accounts of the announcement of the birth of Jesus was to show that it was an important event that happened for all men. The wise and the unlearned man can celebrate the good news of Jesus’ birth! Both accounts show different perspectives with the common theme.

  10. Compare & Contrast Identifying similarities & differences helps us to understand new information as we read. We learned by comparing the 2 passages that there are different perspectives or points of view on one idea. Identifying how the topics compare are important to learning new information.

  11. Compare & Contrast Putting it into Practice Similarities & Differences Your Turn to Practice: Use the Venn Diagram in Moodle Passages: Luke 1:29-34 & Matthew 3:13-17, The Message You can use a 3rd passage to add an extra challenge: John 1:29-34

  12. Write a Journal Response: Why do you think each account of Jesus’ baptism is a little different? 2. What words did you struggle with to comprehend the passages? Record them in your journal. Which ones could you understand with context clues? Write what they mean next to the word. 3. How did you use the CROPQV to help you understand each passage?
