Mission of the College Wiley College, founded in 1873 in Marshall, Texas, is a historically black, primarily liberal arts, residential, co-educational, baccalaureate degree-granting institution affiliated with The United Methodist Church. Committed to the principle of educational access, the College serves traditional and non-traditional students from diverse backgrounds who have expressed a desire and potential for learning in a Christian environment. The College, in fulfilling its basic purpose of providing a liberal arts education with a global focus, endeavors to provide an intellectually stimulating environment, promoting student competencies in communication, as well as, critical and analytical thinking. The College also supports spiritual, ethical, moral, and leadership development. To achieve these superordinate goals, the College promotes an atmosphere of academic freedom and employs a faculty committed to excellence and innovation in teaching, advising, and scholarship. The faculty provides a rigorous curriculum for preparing graduates for professional or graduate studies and/or productive careers in traditional and emerging fields. Wiley College is committed to shared governance and exemplary stewardship of its resources. The College employs innovative techniques and strategic planning in all its administrative processes, using cutting-edge technology in the delivery of services to its clientele. Acknowledging its covenant relationship with The United Methodist Church, the College affirms the ideal of social responsibility and seeks to contribute to the welfare and revitalization of its community.

Teacher Education The mission of the Division of Education is to prepare competent and highly proficient teachers who possess the knowledge, understanding, skills, abilities, and attitudes required of professional educators. Our aim is to continue supporting the overall viability of the College by providing a quality education to prospective teachers. We strive to provide academic and professional experiences for young men and women so that they are prepared to pass the Texas Examination of Educator Standards (TExES), and are able to develop the competencies to practice the high standards and values necessary to achieve success as educators.

Program Goals • To provide the content knowledge required for mastering of the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES). • To provide extensive supervised field-based and laboratory experiences throughout the pre-service teacher certification program. • To provide prospective teachers with an understanding of the learner-centered learning processes, and to translate these understandings into appropriate teaching behaviors. • To provide opportunities for teacher candidates to learn professional practices and responsibilities and the organizational structure of the education profession; and the “Educators’ Code of Ethics”. • To develop a cadre of prospective teachers who demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and professional behavior required for becoming reflective practitioners. • To prepare teacher candidates with a foundation for successful study at the graduate level.

Program Admission • Formally apply to program • Hold a 2.75 GPA with completion of 60 hours. • Pass all parts of the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA), with 265 or above in reading and a minimum of 220 in writing, and 230 in mathematics; or •  Provide transcripts showing a grade • of B or better in Mathematics, English and History.

  11. Test Preparation • Courses designed to cover educator standards and proficiencies • Creative Curriculum preparation courses. • Discussion and analysis of typical classroom scenarios. • Practice TExES exam

Program Outcomes Competent, enthusiastic graduates who are able to: • Successfully pass certification exams and become “highly qualified”. • Secure employment as a classroom teacher in their area of study. • Deliver quality instruction to children from varied backgrounds and with diverse needs. • Understand the importance of education in transforming lives. • Appreciate teaching as a special calling.
