  2. A complex sentence is made up of an independent clause and a dependent clause.

  3. 3 Types of Clauses • There are three kinds of dependent clauses: • adverb clause * • noun clause * • adjective clause

  4. NOUN CLAUSE VS. ADVERB CLAUSE • A noun clause answers questions like "who(m)?" or "what?“.An adverb clause answers questions like "when?", "where?", "why?", "with what goal/result?", and "under what conditions?".

  5. ADVERB CLAUSE • AN ADVERB CLAUSE is a dependent clause thta modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb. It usually describes the where, when, why or how. • USE COMMAS…after the adverb clause when it comes before the main clause.By the time you read this, I will already be a star. • DO NOT USE COMMAS…when the adverb clause is at the end of the sentence.I will help you as long as your need me.

  6. Add an adverb clause to make these two sentences into one. 1. I waited for my friend. I waited till he arrived. 2. He hid somewhere. His pursuers could not find him. 3. You are intelligent. I am intelligent. 4. He was not there. I left a message with his mother. 5. We wish to live. We eat for that purpose. 6. She was very tired. She could barely stand. 7. Don’t eat too much. You may fall ill. 8. He started early. He finished late. 9. You must tell me everything. Otherwise I will not be able to help you. 10. I will get ready. Do not go till then.

  7. NOUN CLAUSE • A NOUN CLAUSE is a dependent clause that functions as a noun. It can be used as a subject or an object. It represents who or what in a sentence.

  8. FIND THE NOUN CLAUSE IN EACH SENTENCE. 1. The king ordered that the traitor should be put to death. 2. He said that he would not go. 3. That he is not interested in the offer is known to us. 4. He said that he was not feeling well. 5. I cannot rely on what he says. Combine the following sentences using noun clauses. 1. I don't know. What kind of a battery is this? I don't know what kind of a flower this is 2. My brother doesn't know. How tall is he? 3. I am not sure. Which chapter are we on? 4. Scientists claim. They will cure cancer. 5. Who is she? No one knows.
