  1. AP Language and Composition February 21, 2013 Mr. Houghteling “It’s a Work and Think Thursday!”

  2. Essential Question • Should high schools have only one valedictorian? • Do you think it is necessary for high schools to have valedictorians at all? • Why or Why not?

  3. AGENDA • Irregular Verbs review bellringer. • “Best in Class” group work.

  4. HOMEWORK • Study your Irregular Verb chart.

  5. “Best In Class” • Students will get into groups of four. • After the groups are assembled, the student with the lowest date of birthday number, please stand up.

  6. “Best In Class” • The student standing will now be a Table Leader. • Each group of three students will go to each table and discuss the topic question. Make sure to use evidence from the text.

  7. “Best In Class” • The Table Leader will record the notes and information from each group and will report out at the end of the session. • All other students will take notes on each question. • **Remember to cite information from text! **

  8. Table Discussions • What problems do schools that select valedictorians encounter? • Why should schools have valedictorians? • What rules for naming a valedictorian should schools establish? • Why are schools experiencing more problems with valedictorians today as opposed to years past? • Should schools post class rankings on transcripts so students see this ranking throughout high school?

  9. “Best in Class” • As you read, identify multiple perspectives on the issue of honoring valedictorians and salutatorians. • Chart the students involved in the various conflicts regarding who wins the valedictory title. For example: • Denny Davies vs. Kylie Barker
