What is the Healthy Schools Scheme? • An award scheme which promotes the physical, social, emotional health & well-being of pupils, staff & the wider community • Part of an All-Wales Network & funded by Welsh Assembly Government • Partnership between education and health • 77 schools from across Cardiff currently part of the Cardiff Network of Healthy Schools • Cardiff scheme has been accredited by the Welsh Assembly Government
Aims • To enhance the school environment so that it is a safe environment which promotes good health. • To develop good home/school/community links, and shared activities with regard to health matters • To develop and implement a coherent health education curriculum. • To develop the school as a health promoting workplace with a commitment to the health and well-being of all staff and pupils.
What do we mean by health? • Healthy Schools adopts a holistic positive definition of health, including :- • Physical health • Emotional health & well-being • Sexual health and relationships • Including consideration of the physical environment
What is a Healthy School? • Positive • Empowering • Inclusive • Promotes the self-esteem of all members of the school community • A healthy School encourages active participation of pupils, works in partnership with other agencies and is committed to on-going school improvement
How? • Recruitment by invitation • Head teacher designates an in-school coordinator • Presentations offered to staff/pupils/governors • Healthy Schools Audit to determine baseline • Training provided for in-school coordinator • Identify and set 3 actions per phase/year (1-3) • Phase 4+ maintenance (1 action per year) • Identify people to support actions from inside/outside school • On-going advice & support from Healthy Schools Team, grants, resources • Assess progress via in-school visits and portfolios • Accreditation & Celebrate success at annual Healthy Schools Award event
School responsibilities • Sign application form, indicating SMT and governors support • Identify coordinator, and in-school team to ensure whole school approach • Coordinator to attend training • Undertake audit, ensure pupil involvement • Develop, implement and evaluate 3 actions plans • Collect evidence and develop school portfolio

End of phase accreditation & celebrating success • Portfolios to be submitted to the healthy schools team by end of July or 5th Oct at the very latest • Portfolios assessed by healthy schools validation group • Schools awarded with healthy schools certificate and Welsh Assembly Government plaque at event at the beginning of November.
