BOOK SUMMARY DUE WEDNESDAY • Read Quietly  • Poetry: • Make a colorful, neat copy of your best poem: • Choose your best poem: • Contrast Poem -- Four Haiku • Thanksgiving Collage -- Magic Pictures • Animal Persons -- Out of a Crowd • Write neatly on Copy Paper • Illustrate colorfully • Explain the poetic device(s) used in your poem • On the bottom 1/3 or ¼ of your paper • List the poetic device(s) used in your poem: • Parallelism -- alliteration • Haiku form -- simile or metaphor • Sensory details -- onomatopoeia • Catalog -- extended metaphor • Write the definition of the poetic device • Explain in a sentence or two how you used the poetic device in your poem • Turn in & Read Quietly 

Monday, February 27, 2012 HW: BOOK SUMMARY DUE WEDNESDAY! • Finish Magic Picture Poem ~or~ Read Quietly!  • Poetry Choice: Choose One or Both! • “Animal Persons” ~or~ Out of a Crowd… • Read the example • Answer the questions in your head or on paper as you read the instructions: • For example: • “Animal Persons,” Part II. : What would a canary do to act like a person? How about a poodle? A turtle?... • Out of a Crowd…, Part I. : What words in the example let you know the girl is afraid? How do you know she is shy? Identify the alliteration. (Hint: there are no similes, metaphors, or onomatopoeia) • Do not skip over this or your poem will not be the BEST! • Your Turn! • Go step by step and write down what the directions say to write down BEFORE writing the actual poem: • “Animal Persons” – words and phrases connected with this “animal person” • Out of a Crowd… - a few strong verbs and adverbs showing what this person is doing • Verbs: W&G, pages 316-318 • Adverbs: W&G, pages 348-351 • Turn in your better poem (Magic Pictures, Animal Persons, or Out of a Crowd) • Read silently 

Poetry Review Activity • Red Literature book, pages 616-621 • Read the two poems • “Ode to enchanted light” • “Snow in the Suburbs” • You may use a dictionary to look up unfamiliar words (latticework, cicada, …) • Answer “Comprehension” Questions #1-13 on pages 618-619: • Number your paper 1 to 13 • Write the letter of the answer only • Choose one question from the “Written Response” section and answer with two or three sentences. • Answer “Vocabulary” Questions #1-7 on page 620: • Connotation means “what the word suggests” • Number your paper 1 to 7 • Write the letter of the answer only • Turn in when completed

Pay special attention to the Background as it will tell you what “Full Fathom Five” is about. • Write the definitions of the 4 bold-faced words in Sound Devices on page 735: • Onomatopoeia • Alliteration • Assonance • Consonance • Take Cornell Notes on your own paper on the Reading Strategy: Clarifying Word Meanings • Write the Definitions of knell and sputters • Read the 2 poems on pages 736 and 737 • Answer the 5 questions on page 737
