  4. Author’s Purpose • The author’s purpose in a fable is to teach a lesson. • Why did the author write the story? (explain author’s purpose) • Remember the lion laughs at the idea that a mouse could ever help him in the beginning. • The lion does help the mouse • Moral – a little friend may prove to be a great friend and being kind is never wasted

He struggled to get free. But the more he wriggled around, the tighter the net twisted around him. • Where did the lion find himself?

  8. Writing Trait: Ideas • All of these sentences tell about one event… Just then the little mouse happened to pass by, and seeing the lion’s sad plight, he knew he could help him. The mouse went up to him and soon gnawed away the ropes of the net, freeing the lion. “ I have helped you like you have helped me and now I have returned the favor.” said the little mouse. “Wasn’t I right – even a mouse can help a lion.” Plight- a dangerous situation Gnawed- bite or nibble at something Freeing- not controlled or letting go
