33. Script Part 1.The Livestrong bracelet. Hello. I’m Parker Mills, and welcome to “Fashion Minute.” Today’s topic is jewelry. The latest in jewelry is the commitment bracelet. I’m sure you’ve noticed the recent trend on campus and around town. Everyone is wearing yellow. It’s not an eye-popping fashion statement, but rather a simple, subtle, thin yellow bracelet with the words “LIVE STRONG” imprinted on the band. The idea for these yellow bracelets was originally conceived by Lance Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France cyclist champion.

34. Script Part 1.The Livestrong bracelet. As you may know, Lance Armstrong Foundation. The LAF believes that knowledge is power and attitude is everything. Their mission is to help people with cancer around the world get the practical information and tools they need to live strong. Part 2.The ONE bracelet. Recently, another commitment bracelet is making its rounds, the simple white rubber bracelet with a singe word imprinted on it : “one.” This has become the symbol of global unity, a fight to end poverty and injustice. Supporters of the “one” movement include many famous people, such as rock star Bono. They want people to wear this bracelet to make a commitment : We commit ourselves— one person, one voice, one vote at a time—to make a better, safer world for all.

35. Script Part 3.The personal commitment bracelet. Another kind of commitment bracelet is the personal commitment bracelet. Here’s a commitment bracelet designed by Kathleen Hall. According to Kathleen Hall, red is the color of purpose. This bracelet is to be worn as a visible reminder that you can accomplish any goal you commit to. Focusing on your goal takes practice and commitment. Fossil beads with a rich red carved antique coral focus bead and an attached commitment box made to hold your goals. 45. Additional Listening A: Do you think I still look fashionable in this dress? B: I think so. Blue is still very fashionable at the moment. A: This style came out last year, though. I like the dress, but I’m not sure whether last year’s fashions will be the same this year. B: I think this kind of dress will stay in fashion for a few more years. People don’t change fashions every year. It would be too expensive. A: Yes. Only the top designer try to tell people to change fashion every year, but only rich people can do it.

A: I wish I could be one of those people, but my budget simply doesn’t stretch that far. I have to limit the amount of money I spend on clothes otherwise I would go on a shopping frenzy. 47. Additional Listening A: Look at all these clothes designed by top fashion designer like Versacci, Calvin Klein, and Vivienne Westwood. What do you think of them? B: Well, they look lovely, but they’re not very practical. I mean, would you wear that dress to the office or walking down the street? A: I know what you mean. People would stare at you in amazement if you wore something like that in an everyday situation. I suppose only extravagant rich people wear them at cocktail parties. B: Maybe. I’m not sure why they have fashion shows like this. Hardly anyone will buy those clothes. The clothes you see are nothing like the ones that ordinary people wear. It seems like a waste of money.

48. Additional Listening A: I think that the designers hold these fashion shows for a few reasons. First, it’s just like a big party. They can meet each other and network. The other thing is that it is great advertising. All the journalists and photographers are there. Thirdly, it give them a chance to show what they would like to see people wearing. B: You mean it’s an expression of their fantasies? A: Yes. I think the designers are saying that these clothes are what they would like to see people wear if those people weren’t concerned with what other people might think. In a way, the designers are saying ‘don’t worry about what others think. Wear what you like!’.

49. Additional Listening B: Very philosophical. I think they design these clothes more for publicity. They try to see who can be the most extreme and outrageous, but still stylish. A: Come on. All this fashion has reminded me that I want to buy some clothes.
