AAESQ Outstanding Achievement Award The Outstanding Achievement Award shall be granted to a member of AAESQ who, due to a particular outstanding achievement, has clearly demonstrated exemplary leadership in education. The award may be granted at any time during a member’s career and the emphasis is on quality of achievement. 2011-2012 recipients of the Outstanding Achievement Award Jane Fullerton-Kelly Iain Millar

I followed in the footsteps of my late grandfather, who was first a teacher and later a school principal with the Montreal School Board Q. Greatest lesson learned? A. You need to have great balance – to satisfy the demands of both your professional and personal life Q. Most notable achievement? A. The programs I have helped establish to support students in need – be it academically, emotionally or physiologically. Q. Most memorable event? A. The moments when a former student, parent or colleague tells me that I have positively affected their life. AAESQ applauds Jane Fullerton-Kelly, truly an innovative recipient

Iain Millar, Retired Centre Director, New Frontiers School Board Accomplishments Founding member of the Quebec Literacy Working Group (QLWG) Helped to establish the first free standing adult centre in the English language sector at the Chateauguay Valley Career Education Centre At the Nova Career Centre Iain helped in the expansion of a three-phase project that resulted in a state of the art facility for adult & vocational education He developed innovative & collaborative projects with the First Nations communities Also took on a mentoring role with staff to help in the succession plans of the Board

Why education? • My interest in alternative learning led me to the then emerging field of continuing education for setting up community education programs Q. Greatest lesson learned? A. MWBA – Management by Walking Around. I also unabashedly emulated outstanding educational practices from leaders such as Keith Fitzpatrick & Wayne Goldthorp Q. Most notable achievement event? A. Involvement with 4 building expansion projects most notably the Nova Career Centre. • Q. Most memorable event? • Jane Elliott “Blue eyes/Brown eyes” taught us at the Nova Career Centre about race & cultural sensitivity and I in turn introduced her to poutine AAESQ applauds Iain Millar, truly an ambassador of the people

Pearson School Board Accomplishments A unique ability to create a team atmosphere Facilitated the smooth transition of several school mergers Participated in the creation of L.B.P.S.B. Safe & Caring Schools Policy Always willing to listen, work collaboratively and to seek out the opinion of others Representative to the Central Parity & Education Committee Always committed to helping students succeed. His greatest strength is his calm & reassuring manner Personal Philosophy Fix the problem rather than fix the blame

Sports and boys’ clubs were a huge part of my early life, which led to counseling and coaching. I really enjoyed working with young people Q. Greatest lesson learned? A. Humility. Every school and board office allowed me to work with some brilliant educators from whom I learned a great deal Q. Most notable achievement? A. No matter the situation I have always remained true to my principles and core values AAESQ applauds Charles Merilees, truly a changed man

Paulette Losier, Retired Administrator, Eastern Townships School Board Background 43 years in the educational field as a: Teacher Department Head – Alexander Galt High School Consultant in language arts & evaluation School administrator – Sherbrooke Elementary Workshop leader, guest speaker & writer Always willing to serve on committees Great fundraiser for student trips

Paulette Losier, Retired Administrator, Eastern Townships School Board Accomplishments Helped to set up ALPS Program to address the requirements of special needs students Set up the Eastern Townships Language Arts Festival – which promoted different facets of literacy. Allowed students, teachers & parents to interact with renowned authors & illustrators Led the S.T.A.R.T. program (Student Target Acheivement & Results Team) a great mentorship program Supported NANS schools at Eastern Townships Paulette’s Philosophy “It’s all about relationships…People that you connect with that motivate you to continue…That and marry the right man, someone who is supportive and can pick up the slack”

I wanted a profession where I could make a difference – I’ve never regretted the decision Q. Greatest lesson learned? A. It’s much more fun to channel energy into thriving rather than just managing and surviving Q. Most notable achievement? A. Forging enduring ties with many colleagues, growing professionally together and exploring avenues that helped them see potential where once they saw only challenges • Q. Ben Fagan, Centre Director, English Montreal School Board Accomplishments A lifelong career dedicated to the education of youth in difficulties, physically disabled, blind & hearing impaired children and to the education of students in the adult sector His contributions to the community are impressive: Board of Directors of Propulsion (a residence for 15 disabled adults) & Constance-Lethbridge Rehabilitation Centre. Currently on the Board of the Canadian Research & Deafness Institute and President of the Board of Habitations Tango which houses disabled adults in N.D.G. Leadership skills and vision brought new technologies into his schools/centre and provided state of the art tools to staff and students

Watching youths at Shawbridge Youth Centre repeatedly fail to thrive in the system; so myself and several others started up the downtown campus of Shawbridge (known today as Mountainview) Q. Greatest lesson learned A. There are many ways to get to the same place – be a good listener Q. Most notable achievement? A. The ability to support disabled children and their parents through tumultuous times. Am appreciative of the great support of many and in particular Tony Lacroce Q. Most memorable moment? A. Teaching a terrified, blind 14 year old student to swim and seeing him compete in Defi Sportif by years end AAESQ applauds Ben Fagan, truly sexy and he knows it

  19. AAESQ Honourary Life Membership Award The Honourary Life Membership award is given to an individual who has made a distinguished contribution to AAESQ. Why education? • I love learning and have been inspired by great teachers who not only • taught “book knowledge” but challenged me to better myself through action Q. Greatest lesson learned? A. Always champion the child by validating his experiences and guiding him to self-fulfillment • Q. Most notable achievement event? • The relationships that I’ve developed and maintained throughout my career. • My active participation in my professional associations at all levels. • Outside of my work, being a parent is my greatest source of pride • Q. Most memorable event? • Being recognized by my colleagues for a number of awards, especially the CASA EXL Award as Canadian Superintendent of the Year AAESQ applauds Carol Gray, truly the energizer bunny

Greatest lesson learned? A. A sense of fulfillment and the desire to solve problems • Q. Most notable achievement event? • Children and their learning are challenging puzzles . Teachers play a pivotal role in the solution to the puzzles • Q. Most memorable event? • Proud to be able to contribute to the solutions of the puzzles and to creating new puzzles of my own.
