  4. Cleisthenes – 508 BCE • All free men, age 18 and who owned property, could vote and hold office. • Assembly of 500 • 50 from each of 10 geographic areas of Athens • All chosen by lottery • Power to impeach

  5. Persian Wars • 500 to 479 BCE • Persians conquered Ionia, then headed towards Athens

  12. Peloponnesian War431 – 404 BCE • Jealousy • Sparta and Athens went to war • Plague struck Athens • Sparta won
